BRoP interview: Michael Anthony

Michael AnthonyWelcome to Michael Anthony, this week’s Blog Ring of Power guest. Michael grew up in the suburbs of Virginia. As the middle child, everything requiring electricity or batteries was either hogged by the oldest or begged for by the youngest. All too familiar with boredom spawned from idle thumbs, he found adventure in the plethora of novels, encyclopedias, and maps found on the bookshelf. It was during his journey through those shelves that he discovered The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer and The Giver by Lois Lowry.

From that day to this, Michael has had a love for great stories, fascinating characters, and travel. He hopes to see every corner of the world someday, and when he finishes down here, he has his eyes set on the moon. He is currently studying history at a local college while he chases his dream of becoming one of the greatest writers of his age.

PART 4: ABOUT YOUR CURRENT WORK

Tell us about your new book and when it is out? Where can people purchase it? My Best Friend Death is a roller coaster of a tale that takes place in a small town in Utah. It’s about a teenager named Damien Crown who dies, but wakes up to find himself in a new body— with Death as his life coach. It was released June 8, 2014, on Amazon.

Is there anything new, unusual, or interesting about your book? How is it different from other books on the same subject? My Best Friend Death differs in many ways. At its core, it IS a dark novel, but the path it takes to get there is light-hearted and littered with humor and lovable characters. There are twists at every turn, and I’m sure this book will keep you guessing to the very end. Also, not only do you get to meet Death, but you get to meet Life as well. How many other books can boast that?!

What was the hardest part of writing this book? The hardest part about writing this book was the emotional toll it took on me. I can’t write a sad scene unless I’m sad, and I can’t write a happy scene unless I’m happy. This book really stretched the limits of my emotional stability.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why? My favorite chapter would have to be the mudball fight between my main and secondary characters. It was such a joy to write, and I was really able to cut loose and have fun with it.

There is another chapter that I love equally as much, but it didn’t make it into my story. One of my characters LOVES Kingdom Hearts. He goes to a Halloween party, drinks too much spiked punch, and starts beating up a ninja with a foam keyblade. Anyone who has played Kingdom Hearts know why that’s so awesome!

Did you learn anything from writing this book and what was it? I learned a lot about myself over the course of writing this book. I was able to come face to face with my fear of being a one book novelist and cut it off at the knees. I learned that I was a novelist, in it for the long haul.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in this book? Probably not, but I go back and forth with how I ended the novel. Can’t say much more than that.

Tell us about your book’s cover – where did the design come from and what was the design process like? My book cover was designed by the awesome Annette Tremblay aka Midnight Whimsy. She did a fantastic job, and I couldn’t be happier with my cover. The design process was fairly simple. I filled out a detailed questionnaire about my novel, including the synopsis, tagline, and links to other covers I like/disliked. From there, the magic was all hers. She sent me three concepts (mockups) for different cover designs, and I picked one. Between my critiques and her artistic vision, we (but mostly she) produced the cover before you.

Is your book in print, ebook or both? Ebook only.

MY BEST FRIEND DEATHMY BEST FRIEND DEATH: Damien Crown devotes his life to being his brother’s superman. Like all heroes, he’s locked in a deadly war with a formidable foe—his brother’s depression. Instead of perishing in a climactic battle as comics suggests, he dies at the screech of tires and the blare of a car horn. But in those last precious moments, he regrets not taking off the cape and living his own life.

But those regrets don’t last long when Death becomes his life-coach.

Given a new body and one more year to live, Damien seizes the opportunity to reinvent himself. Forbidden by Death from making contact with his old family, he knows the trek will be hard, but he’s happy to leave behind the pressures of his old life.

Until his brother attempts suicide.

Now, the only way to save his brother is to break Death’s rules. With a life any kid would kill for, Damien finds himself stuck between who he was, and who he wants to be. He can don his cape and die for his brother, or hang it up and finally live for himself.

You can find MY BEST FRIEND’S DEATH on Amazon!

Deb Weltman: Money study group begins

MeditationFollowing is from Deborah Weltman:

Money Study Group
Tuesday nights, June 17 – August 19, 2014
10 sessions
7-9 PM

No charge, but love offerings gratefully accepted

Prior to our first session, please purchase the book What Will I Do With My Money by Ray Linder. Please purchase a spiral notebook. Bring both to the Study Group with you on June 17th. I got my copy of the book through Amazon Used Books for under a dollar (plus shipping).

In this study group we will read and do the exercises in the book. We will do some journaling. It is expected that group members will do the reading and exercises before each meeting. We will be “in group” together as  teachers to each other and as students of our own (and our group members’) lives.

What Will I Do With My Money, How Your Personality Affects Your Financial Behavior covers what we learned about money in our families of origin (which shapes our adult money handling skills), a bit about the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), and then, how our MBTI relates to our personal money focus: how we think about money, how we manage it, its importance…or lack of importance… to us. We will learn how we can most effectively use our personal money skills/traits, both as individuals and in relationships (business or marriage). There is also a section on our “best work” based on our MBTI. The book concludes with a brief discussion of money and spirituality. The author shares biblical quotes he feels are most relevant to a discussion on money. I would love for us all to add wisdom from our own spiritual/religious belief systems. That will be a great discussion!

Call Deborah @ 314-544-2555 to join the group. Seating is limited. Call ASAP.

P.S. As always, when I lead a group or a class, I ask that you let me know if you have a strong interest but can’t make this session. This allows me to develop a waiting list for future groups. Thanks!

Two X flares erupt

Reprinted from Space Weather News

http://spaceweather.com

Breaking a weeks-long spell of quiet, the sun erupted on June 10th, producing not one but two X-class solar flares. The source is a new sunspot just emerging over the sun’s southeastern limb. This active region is not squarely facing our planet.  However, it will become increasingly geoeffective as it turns toward Earth in the days ahead. Check http://spaceweather.com for details and updates.

PART 5: WORDS OF WISDOM

What are the most important elements of good writing? Mood.  I believe in order to write well, you have to be in a certain state of mind or mood.  The writing with flow along with it.

Do you have any advice for other writers? Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t become a published author.  Don’t let negative criticism get you down with reviews either.

What do you feel is the key to your success? To keep on writing and coming out with new stories for everyone to enjoy.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers? Your support means everything.  I appreciate each and every one of you who read my stories, give me feedback and leave reviews.

What are your current / future project(s)? – Up next is Book 2 in the Sempiternal Series.  Everyone seemed to fall in love with Sarenah, Draco and Saint in Evanescent, Book 1, so I’d better get started on another one in that series.

1461430_10201680302917876_7672341636662725558_nA MAGIC WITHIN: Normalcy. I need to get back to a state of normalcy. What’s happened to me? Why am I here in this orphanage, and why am I forbidden to leave? Everyone is so very cruel here. I can’t eat. I can’t sleep. It’s the paranoia getting to me. It’s like someone’s always watching, always listening. There’s a general fear around here, and for some reason, it seems fueled by my arrival, but why are they afraid of me? I didn’t ask for this. I don’t even know how I got here. I need to go home. My parents must be worried sick. There has to be someone here who can help me, who can give me answers and lead me in the right direction so I can get out of here. There is this one boy, Lydic. Could he be my key to getting out? I can see it in his eyes he feels sorry for me. He seems to know more than he’s letting on. These people aren’t like anyone I’ve ever met before. They act like I have secrets, but they’re the ones not talking. I’ve never been alone like this, and I’ll do whatever it takes to figure out what’s going on and get out.

Possible meteor storm in tonight’s forecast

Reprinted from Space Weather News for May 23, 2014
http://spaceweather.com
METEOR ALERT: This weekend, Earth will pass through a stream of debris from Comet 209P/LINEAR. If forecasters are correct, the encounter could produce an outburst of bright meteors numbering more than 200 per hour.  Most models agree that peak rates should occur between the hours of 0600 UT and 0800 UT (2 a.m. and 4 a.m. EDT) on Saturday morning, May 24th, a time frame that favors observers in North America.  It is worth noting, however, that Earth has never encountered this stream of debris before, so forecasters cannot be certain of their predictions. The display could be a complete dud, a fantastic “meteor storm,” or anything in between. Visit http://spaceweather.com for full coverage.

Heidi Miller reviews SOLAR LULLABY

Kindle short story

Kindle & audiobook available

Thanks to Heidi Ruby Miller for her review of SOLAR LULLABY! I met Heidi via the Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday blog. Don’t miss her Ambasadora series if you’re a sci-fi adventure fan who likes strong female characters!

Perfect title

The idea of sentient communication through solar flares is an incredible idea, one I’ve not run into before in SF. And, the way Fendley once again deftly worked in her love of Meso-American cultures cements her unique mythos within the Science Fiction community. Great concept, engaging characterization!--Heidi Miller

And I appreciate these other inspiring reviews of the Kindle version and audiobook, narrated by Tiffany Williams. They make me want to write a sequel!

great listen

I thought the story was very good and interesting. can’t wait for another part. narration was excellent and would definitely recommend–Yaquelin, Miami, FL

I want more!

The story wasn’t what I expected. It was better, original. I hope the author writes more because I want to know who/what this/these solar being/s are! This was such a tease. It ended way to fast but it was a short story and could of easily became a novel.

Well written, and the protagonist was easy to connect with.

The narration started a little mono-toned but quickly came to life. It was as if the narrator herself moved and became alive as the story did. At the very start I thought I wasnt going to like the narration but I quickly found my opinion change as the narrator improved.
Only bummer, I wish I could go get part 2, the complete story that lets us learn all about the sun being/s. Oh and what is it they are saying and why?
Over all, a fun short listen!!!–Amazon Customer, Broadhead, WI

~~Red Alert~~

Dr. Flare Haich works in an underground lab dubbed the Triple S for its unique design. It has been years since the Mayan Event destroyed a half billion people. She works on a project called the Empress which deals with electro magnetic pulse radiation. It is also worth mentioning that her parents were both dedicated researchers in this area, as well. In her father’s journal, he describes with great detail his findings concerning a sentient being….

“Red Alert” notifies the ones in the lab that a huge EMP is on its way! Sometimes it is extremely difficult to convince the higher-ups that an event will occur. Bureaucracy at its finest!

Love the ending of this one. Absolutely incredible. I also love a story that conveys so much meaning with few words.

Most highly recommended.--A Navy Vet, VT
