Broadly Speaking: Alternate History

Following is a reprint from Broadly Speaking:

If you’ve been to the movies lately, you may have seen the documentary about Abraham Lincoln’s hidden past as a vampire hunter.

What?  He wasn’t a vampire hunter?  He was in the alternate history novel (and movie) Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter. In this month’s episode of Broadly Speaking, host Tracy S. Morris takes a look at the facts and fictions of alternate history along with three alternate history authors.

First up, Roberta Rogow discusses avenues of research for those writing alternate history.

Then Sandra Saidak discusses pre-history alternate history as well as what makes an alternate history novel alternate history when it’s set before written history as well as getting your details right for the fans.

Lastly, J. Kathleen Cheney talks about researching history when you don’t even speak the language that your primary sources are written in.

On a technical note: I was holding my four-month-old daughter while recording this podcast. Under the audio, you will hear her attempts to join in the conversation.

BRoP interview: Susan Kaye Quinn

Susan Kaye QuinnIt’s my great pleasure to introduce Susan Kaye Quinn as our guest for this week’s Blog Ring of Power interview. I met her through blog posts on The Writers’ Lens and Pots & Pens (she was Ansha Kotyk’s guest). I loved the concept for OPEN MINDS and the book lived up to my expectations–and so did the sequel. Can’t wait for book 3!

Don’t miss the rest of Susan’s BRoP interview:

  • Part 2 @ Emily – Friday, Aug. 3
  • Part 3 @ Sandra – Monday, Aug. 6
  • Part 4 @ Dean – Tuesday, Aug. 7
  • Part 5 @ Terri– Wednesday, Aug. 8

SUSAN KAYE QUINN grew up in California, where she wrote snippets of stories and passed them to her friends during class. She pursued a bunch of engineering degrees and worked a lot of geeky jobs, including turns at GE Aircraft Engines, NASA, and NCAR. Now that she writes novels, her business card says “Author and Rocket Scientist” and she doesn’t have to sneak her notes anymore. All that engineering comes in handy when dreaming up paranormal powers in future worlds or mixing science with fantasy to conjure slightly plausible inventions. Susan writes from the Chicago suburbs with her three boys, two cats, and one husband. Which, it turns out, is exactly as much as she can handle.

PART 1: ABOUT YOU

BRoP: How long have you been writing?

Susan: This December, it will be five years. Which amazes me, because it still feels like I just discovered this new thrill ride called writing.

BRoP: What genre do you write?

Susan: I write young adult and middle grade stories, everything from science fiction to love stories to fantasy – and mixtures of all three.

BRoP: What is your favorite theme/genre to write about?

Susan: Anything that challenges my readers to think: agonizing moral choices, mind-blowing future possibilities, something that causes the reader to say, what if it was me? What would I do? That’s the kind of story that revs my engine, so that’s the kind that I love to write.

BRoP: What books have most influenced your life?

Susan: I read vast quantities of science fiction as a kid and young adult: the classics like Heinlein (Stranger in a Strange Land), Bradbury (Fahrenheit 451) and Asimov (Foundation Series, I, Robot), as well as Frederik Pohl (most recently, The Last Theorem) and Ursula K. LeGuin (Left Hand of Darkness). My modern influences, especially since I started reading (and then writing) middle grade and young adult fiction have been authors like Holly Black (White Cat), Scott Westerfeld (Uglies, Leviathan), Rick Riordan (The Lightning Thief), and Suzanne Collins (Hunger Games). I love their crisp, evocative styles and their amazing imaginations—someday I hope to write books half as good as theirs!

BRoP: When did you first consider yourself a professional writer?

Susan: I suppose when my first novel (Life, Liberty, and Pursuit, a love story) was published by a small press. And while that was an amazing feeling, I honestly can say it was even more of a revelation to me when I realized I was a writer at all (which, oddly, occurred when picking up a printed manuscript, and the Staples guy asked, “Oh, are you a writer?” Yes, yes I am). You see, I had spent my entire adult life thinking of myself as an engineer and scientist (I have a Ph.D. in environmental engineering, so I was somewhat serious about believing this to be true). Then a funny thing happened – I stopped working for a while to stay home with my kids, started reading their books, and rediscovered my childhood love of writing stories. I wrote all the time when I was a kid, then left that frivolity behind when I became a serious adult, pursuing engineering degrees and work experience. But once the writing bug bit me again, I quickly realized this was what I wanted to do full-time (which I now am lucky enough to do).

BRoP: What format is your book(s) available in (print, e-book, audio book, etc.)?

Susan: Print and ebook.

Open MindsWhen everyone reads minds, a secret is a dangerous thing to keep.

Sixteen-year-old Kira Moore is a zero, someone who can’t read thoughts or be read by others. Zeros are outcasts who can’t be trusted, leaving her no chance with Raf, a regular mindreader and the best friend she secretly loves. When she accidentally controls Raf’s mind and nearly kills him, Kira tries to hide her frightening new ability from her family and an increasingly suspicious Raf. But lies tangle around her, and she’s dragged deep into a hidden underworld of mindjackers, where having to mind control everyone she loves is just the beginning of the deadly choices before her.

Closed Hearts When you control minds, only your heart can be used against you.

Eight months ago, Kira Moore revealed to the mindreading world that mindjackers like herself were hidden in their midst. Now she wonders if telling the truth was the right choice after all. As wild rumors spread, a powerful anti-jacker politician capitalizes on mindreaders’ fears and strips jackers of their rights. While some jackers flee to Jackertown–a slum rife with jackworkers who trade mind control favors for cash–Kira and her family hide from the readers who fear her and jackers who hate her. But when a jacker Clan member makes Kira’s boyfriend Raf collapse in her arms, Kira is forced to save the people she loves by facing the thing she fears most: FBI agent Kestrel and his experimental torture chamber for jackers.

Why let a little thing like dying get in the way of a good time?Thirty-six-year-old Irene Dunphy didn’t plan on dying any time soon, but that’s exactly what happens when she makes the mistake of getting behind the wheel after a night bar-hopping with friends. She finds herself stranded on Earth as a ghost, where the food has no taste, the alcohol doesn’t get you drunk, and the sex…well, let’s just say “don’t bother.” To make matters worse, the only person who can see her—courtesy of a book he found in his school library—is a fourteen-year-old boy genius obsessed with the afterlife. This sounds suspiciously like hell to Irene, so she prepares to strike out for the Great Beyond. The only problem is that, while this side has exorcism, ghost repellents, and soul devouring demons, the other side has three-headed hell hounds, final judgment, and eternal torment. If only there was a third option…

5 STARS in Midwest Book Review!

Many thanks to Christy Tillery French for her 5-STAR rating of ZERO TIME in Midwest Book Review!

“T.W. Fendley has certainly written an interesting, suspenseful book. Genred historical fantasy, Zero Time could be classified as one heck of a sci-fi involving time travel and aliens, all tying in with the Mesoamerican culture and the end of the Mayan calendar. Although the names of characters are at first a bit difficult to read, with practice, the reader quickly overcomes this and is rewarded with an imaginative, compelling, smartly written read.”

Thanks for the great review!

Zero TimeThanks to Robin Tidwell of All on the Same Page bookstore in Creve Coeur for this review of ZERO TIME and for supporting local authors!

Chick lit meets science fiction! Although, truthfully, this well-written missive is far beyond the average, slightly denigrating definition of ‘chick lit.’ Time travel, of course; a strange genetic defect; modern times meets an ancient civilization – once the reader becomes accustomed to the rather difficult pronunciation of the futuristic names, the story flows very well. Strong female characters and yes, love and family, easily make this book a fantastic sci-fi choice for any reader.”

PART 2: THE WRITING LIFE

BRoP: What is your writing process? Do you follow a regular routine? Do you use pen and paper or computer? Work at home or at the library/Starbucks, etc.

DV:  Currently, I work at home on an old desktop.  My laptop is ailing and needs replaced.  I prefer to write in the morning before I go to work, but often write when I return in the evening.  After dinner, I make coffee and let my parrots out to play, then I sit down at the computer for a couple of hours

BRoP: How do you balance writing with other aspects of your life?

DV: It’s difficult because I work full-time and a lot of my free time is spent on critique groups , blogging and promotion.  But I sometimes just take an evening off to read or walk in the park or watch a movie with my husband and son.  We are roller coaster fanatics and the time we spend together in this pursuit is precious.

BRoP:  How much time per day do you spend on your writing?

DV: It varies.  If I’m promoting a new book, this time is sometimes less than two hours a day.  I like to write for three to four hours a day. Sleep is often sacrificed.

BRoP: What has been the most surprising reaction to something you’ve written?

DV:  A few reviewers have commented on the beauty of my prose and say it surprised them to find this in a vampire novel.  It’s nice to hear that kind of praise.  I’m very hard on myself.

BRoP: What is the strongest criticism you’ve ever received as an author?

DV:  Some readers are turned off by the science, politics and lack of “romance” in my vampire novels.  I’m a bit cynical sometimes in my view of relationships and sex. I don’t like to romanticize these things too much.

BRoP:  The best compliment?

DV:  I got a review (positive) that said My Fearful Symmetry was “a dark and disturbing read”.  I absolutely loved that!  Call me crazy, but I think vampires should be dark and disturbing.

BRoP:  Other than your family, what has been your greatest source of support?

DV:  My crit groups. They kick me in the butt when I need it, brainstorm with me and even help with proofing.

BRoP:  How do you deal with rejection and/or negative reviews?

DV:  It’s never easy, but I was used to it from the theatre.  You have to realize not everyone will like your work.

BRoP: Where can readers find you and your work?

My Trailer: http://deniseverricowriter.webs.com/apps/videos/videos/show/12715998-immortyl-revolution-trailer

SERVANT OF THE GODDESS is the fourth novel of the urban fantasy vampire series written by DServant of the Goddessenise Verrico. This installment follows up her debut novel, CARA MIA, which introduces the characters and world of Immortyl Revolution and its sequel, TWILIGHT OF THE GODS and MY FEARFUL SYMMETRY.  Set in 2001, Verrico’s MY FEARFUL SYMMETRY introduced a new vampire hero, Cedric MacKinnon, a temple dancer in service to the Goddess Kali, who learns his beauty and speed render him a lethal weapon. “My vampire society originates in India. In my third novel, MY FEARFUL SYMMETRY, I delve deeper into the origins,” says Verrico.   “In the fourth book, I unite heroine Mia Disantini and Cedric in a way that raises some sparks.  It takes place in NYC in 2001, so there will be momentous events my characters must deal with.”  As in all her novels, SERVANT OF THE GODDESS maintains a science fiction twist on the genre, action-packed thrills and a touch of romance.

For my Clarion sponsors: 3 new stories

The Clarion Write-a-Thon ends on Aug. 4. Where has the time gone? My goal was to write three short stories about White Heron, the master shaman from my book, ZERO TIME.

Well, that’s what “The Mother Serpent’s Daughter” is about, but “Jaguar Hope” turned out to be a prequel to ZERO TIME. Both are more than 6,000 words, so they are not-so-short stories or mini-novellas.

And the third story? I just started it, but it has nothing to do with anything I’ve ever written. The working title is “Moonblood,” and that’s all I’m saying for now.

The Write-a-Thon is raising money to help folks attend the six-week Clarion Workshop so they can learn from the masters how to write science fiction and fantasy. So far, Clarion’s raised more than $11,000 toward the $18,000 goal. To show my appreciation for your generosity, I’ll send those who sponsor me copies of these three stories (as soon as they are polished enough for release). Just be sure to donate publicly or so I can see your name, and send your email address to me at twfendley@gmail.com.

Sponsor me

ps — In case you’re wondering about the really cool book covers for the e-release of the stories, those were done by my friend, author/illustrator Jennifer Stolzer. She also designed the Plumed Serpent on the top of this page.
