BRoP interview: Kelly Hashway

KH headshotWelcome to KELLY HASHWAY, this week’s Blog Ring of Power guest! Kelly grew up reading R.L. Stein’s Fear Street novels and writing stories of her own, so it was no surprise to her family when she majored in English and later obtained a masters degree in English Secondary Education from East Stroudsburg University. After teaching middle school language arts for seven years, Hashway went back to school and focused specifically on writing. She is now the author of three young adult series, one middle grade series, and several picture books. She also writes contemporary romance under the pen name Ashelyn Drake. When she isn’t writing, Hashway works as a freelance editor for small presses as well as for her own list of clients. In her spare time, she enjoys running, traveling, and volunteering with the PTO. Hashway currently resides in Pennsylvania with her husband, daughter, and two pets.

PART 2: THE WRITING LIFE

What is your writing process? Do you follow a regular routine? Do you use pen and paper or computer? Work at home or at the library/Starbucks, etc.  I like to write at my dining room table. I can spread out with my laptop, notebook, daily planner, and usually copies of my published books. (Having them around is good motivation.) I use a combination of typing and writing by hand. I think it keeps the creativity flowing better that way.

How much time per day do you spend on your writing? During the school week, I write from 8:50-2:40 each day. Of course I do work as a freelance editor, so when I have client edits to do, I split my time between writing and editing. I also tend to work in the evenings after my daughter goes to bed, which gives me an extra two hours of writing time.

What has been the most surprising reaction to something you’ve written? I’m blown away when people I don’t really know send me messages either on Facebook or Twitter to tell me their reactions to different parts of my books while they’re reading. It’s almost like I’m getting to read the book with them, and it’s such a great feeling. I never expected people to interact with me while they read, but I’m so glad they do.

Other than your family, what has been your greatest source of support? I’m amazed by the amount of support I’ve received by the writing community. Going through this journey with other writers and experiencing each other’s highs and lows is an incredible thing. I couldn’t write without the support of other writers.

How do you deal with rejection and/or negative reviews? I always let myself get upset…for a little while. I have to get those feelings out. Sometimes I cry. Sometimes I call my mom and vent to her. But then I always get back out there because that’s what this industry is about. You have to keep persevering in the face of rejection.

Face of Death_front cover (2)

FACE OF DEATH: Having fallen at the hands of Hades, Jodi’s enduring torture like she never imagined. Worse, she has to watch her Ophi friends suffer along with her—the punishment doled out by the very people she’d sentenced to life in Tartarus. Hell. This is one reunion Jodi hoped would never happen, but now she must find a way to free them all.

Except the underworld is nearly impossible to escape.

Jodi’s one chance may rest in raising the human soul she killed when she drank Medusa’s blood.

But splitting her human soul from her Ophi soul means living a double life: One as an Ophi experiencing unspeakable torture and the other as the human she could have been if she never came into her powers. With her two worlds colliding, Jodi will have to make the toughest decision she’s faced yet.

BRoP interview: Vera Nazarian

CobwebBride-Author-ImageWelcome to VERA NAZARIAN, this week’s Blog Ring of Power guest! PART 2: THE WRITING LIFE

What is your writing process? Do you follow a regular routine? Do you use pen and paper or computer? Work at home or at the library/Starbucks, etc. In my early years I used to write in longhand. However I developed carpal tunnel and other repetitive stress hand problems due to a computer day job, and since then, have switched to composing directly on the computer. My routine is simple, it is called, “get those dratted words down however and whenever you can, and just get it written,” at any odd hours, especially when on deadline. I usualy prefer perfect silence and peaceful nighttime. No music, and I always write at home. Due to recent problems with not being able to sit for long hours, I switch between working on my lap with my feet up on the sofa, while typing on a split keyboard (the only kind I can really type on, prefer the classic Microsoft Natural KB), and typing while standing up at a desk I’ve rigged up, made of stacked boxes.

How do you balance writing with other aspects of your life? I officially have no life. There, I’ve said it. The last time I’ve had a real vacation (as opposed to a writers convention or conference working “vacation”) was back in the previous millennium. Seriously!

When do you write? As a lifelong night owl, I work best at night. My best writing occurs after midnight, and can go till 7:00 AM. When I had fulltime day jobs, I wrote during lunch, then after I got home till the wee hours (and run on close to no sleep), and on weekends. Now that I am self-employed as a fulltime freelance writer and publisher, I can write pretty much any time I can when on deadline, but I still prefer the hours of darkness. It helps me get into a quiet receptive zen state in order to channel my thoughts.

How much time per day do you spend on your writing? It varies completely. Normally I don’t write every day, when I am between major projects, and my creativity, when relaxed, comes in bursts. But when a deadline looms, I whip myself into a daily frenzy pace, cranking out at least 2,000 words a day (and often more, towards the end) for as long as needed until the book is done. It may take anywhere from two to six hours a day, and sometimes more.

What has been the most surprising reaction to something you’ve written? You know, these days nothing surprises me much anymore. I’ve had the widest range of reactions imaginable. And that’s kind of exciting.

Is your book in print, ebook or both? Ebook, Trade Hardcover, and Trade Paperback.

CobwebForest-Mockup1The world is broken… A dark Goddess rises. A mortal maiden must stop her.

COBWEB FOREST (Cobweb Bride Trilogy, Book Three) is the third and final book of the intricate epic fantasy flavored by Renaissance history and the romantic myth of Persephone, about death’s ultimatum to the world.

Percy Ayren, ordinary girl from the small village of Oarclaven, and now Death’s Champion, has delivered the Cobweb Bride to Lord Death–or so she thinks!

But nothing is ever as easy as it seems. Percy and Beltain Chidair, the valiant and honorable Black Knight, discover that even more is at stake than anyone could have imagined, when ancient gods enter the fray.

It is now a season of winter darkness. Gods rise and walk the earth in unrelieved desire, and the Longest Night is without end…

Meanwhile, landmarks continue to disappear throughout the realm. The cruel Sovereign’s dead armies of the Trovadii clad in the colors of pomegranate and blood march north… As the mad Duke Hoarfrost continues to lay siege to the city of Letheburg, it is up to Claere Liguon, the Emperor’s dead daughter and the passionate Vlau Fiomarre who killed her, to take a stand against the enemy.

But Percy still has a difficult task to do, the greatest task of all… For in the end the Cobweb Bride awaits, together with the final answer.

At last all the occult mysteries are revealed in this stunning conclusion to the Cobweb Bride trilogy.

X-flare creates “magnetic crochet”

Reprinted from Space Weather News for March 30, 2014
http://spaceweather.com

X-FLARE:  The magnetic canopy of sunspot AR2017 erupted yesterday, March 29th, producing an impulsive X1-class solar flare.  Ionizing radiation from the flare produced electrical currents in Earth’s upper atmosphere and a ripple in Earth’s magnetic field detected by magnetometers across the dayside of our planet.  Read more about this rare “magnetic crochet” and the possibility of more X-flares this weekend on today’s edition of http://spaceweather.com.

PART 2: THE WRITING LIFE

When do you write?  I’m not much of a morning person when it comes to writing.  I can edit in the morning, but usually write new words in the afternoon and evening.

How much time per day do you spend on your writing?  Probably about 6 hours if I include editing.  I’m a slow writer.

What has been the most surprising reaction to something you’ve written?  I was once told that a short story was ‘sexually subversive’.  To this day, I’m not even sure what that meant.

Other than your family, what has been your greatest source of support?  I’m a member of several writing groups, and Carpe Libris and Codex have been lifesavers for me.

How do you deal with rejection and/or negative reviews?  Rejection is just part of the job for me.  Negative reviews?  Well, for the most part I’m not reading reviews any longer.  I found that I was obsessing over every negative thing people said (even in a glowing review, there’s usually one sentence devoted to ‘what could have been done better’) so I found that to keep my productivity up, I couldn’t allow them to distract me.  Unfortunately, this means that I don’t read that good reviews either, but I’ve decided that’s what I have to do.

Is your book in print, ebook or both? Both

Kimberly Schneider: Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

KimberlySchneider-2Guest post by Kimberly Schneider

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you!

Whether or not you have any connection to the Irish-ness so many people around the world celebrate today, I invite you to step into the wisdom of one of St. Patrick’s greatest insights: that the Otherworld is all around us and that the Divine pulses in and through every particle of your being.

I was fortunate to dip into that reality in a spectacular way earlier this month, when I participated in the Celtic Soul Experience with Irish brothers and singers Owen and Moley O’Suilleabhain and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. I’m still integrating the wonder and joy of those days so I decided that the best way to share a bit of the magic with you would be to create a short slide show of photos from the weekend, set to one of Owen and Moley’s songs.

If you’d like to get a taste of our time together, you can watch that right here (it takes a few moments to load): http://www.smilebox.com/playBlog/4e4441774d6a67794e6a4d3d0d0a&blogview=true

I hope you enjoy it! If you want to read about Owen and Moley, or hear more of their music, their website is: http://owenandmoley.com/

The Celtic Soul Experience was part of the Together in Faith Series created by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.  You can see what else the Sisters are offering this year at: http://togetherinfaithseries.com/

Finally, here’s an adapted version of St. Patrick’s prayer for you, which I sometimes say with my morning meditation and prayers:

Christ* before me, Christ behind me, Christ under my feet…

Christ within me, Christ over me, let all around me be Christ…

Christ in every thought, word and deed…

Christ in every wave and every particle….

Christ in every heartbeat and breath.

Christ be in the space between me and everyone I encounter today.

Christ on the lips of those who speak of me, the

minds of those who think of me, the hearts of those

who feel about me. Christ in my blood and bone,

Christ in every cell and wave and particle and in

the space around me. Christ guide me, inspire

me, protect me and encourage me, Christ be with me,

today and always, in all ways.

(*Note: use whatever word you like to represent the aspect of

Divinity you wish to invoke with this prayer).

I invite you to create a similar prayer for yourself to remind you that the Divine is with you always, in all ways…in fact, YOU are a spark of Divinity.

You are an expression of Essence.

You are a manifestation of the All that Is.

May the wonder of that knowingness rise up inside you today and fill your heart with love and laughter.

BRoP interview: Matthew Cox

MCox_02_Light

Welcome to Matthew Cox, this week’s Blog Ring of Power guest. Born in a little town known as South Amboy, NJ, in 1973, Matthew has been creating science fiction and fantasy worlds for most of his reasoning life. Somewhere between fifteen to eighteen of them spent developing the world in which Division Zero, Virtual Immortality, and The Awakened Series take place. He has several other projects in the works as well as a collaborative science fiction endeavor with author Tony Healey.

Matthew is also an avid gamer, a recovered WoW addict, Gamemaster for two custom systems (Chronicles of Eldrinaath [Fantasy] and Divergent Fates [Sci Fi], and a fan of anime, British humour (<- deliberate), and intellectual science fiction that questions the nature of reality, life, and what happens after it.

He is also fond of cats.

Awards include a Writers of the Future Honorable Mention for an excerpt of Prophet of the Badlands.

PART 3: THE CREATIVE PROCESS

Where do you get your story ideas? Most of the time I’ll see something that will trigger a little seed of thought, which tumbles down the hills of my brain picking up other things along the way until a plot ball slams into the ground at the bottom. I’ve had about 20 years of worldbuilding to develop the setting for the Sci Fi books, as well as a Fantasy world I haven’t touched yet.

Some of my plots started off as ideas I put together to run as tabletop RPG sessions (Virtual Immortality was one such example). Caller 107 came to me as an eerily vivid dream, and I wrote it down as soon as I woke up.

Do you have a specific writing style? I will usually spend a week or three working on an outline. I’ll write down key events, key moments in the character’s development. Then rearrange these into a chapter outline, add more detail, sprinkle on some subplots and get everything in the order I want.

Once I have that chapter outline set up, I’ll migrate it from a spreadsheet into Word and start drafting. Once I’m in the drafting phase I just type until I finish from beginning to end. Once that’s done, I’ll let it sit for a few days and do edit pass 1. After that, I start looking for betas.

How do you deal with writer’s block? If I get it, I’ll get back to you. (Seriously, I haven’t had this issue yet.) The only thing I think might come close is getting started on something. I have a little habit that I like to do wherein the first word of a book (or short story) needs to be something meaningful to the character or the situation. I put a lot of thought into the first word, and I can sometimes stew over it for a few hours.

How do you develop your plots and characters? Do you use any set formula? No set formula. I just envision the world around them, the situation they’re going through, and try to construct a complete psyche for them. Within the framework of that artificial personality, I base the character’s reactions on how I think they would react.

Are you a “plotter” or a “pantser” (do you plan/outline the story ahead of time or write “by the seat of your pants”)? Plotter. When I first started trying to write, I’d always kind of wander off and get lost/stuck before getting too far into something. I decided to try outlining the key points and it worked. I think of it like setting pylons in a waterway between banks. The outline gives me something to bridge, in segments, from one side (beginning) to the other (end). Within each chapter, though, I tend to wing it a lot. My outlines have major points and events – and minor details often come out of nowhere while I’m writing.

For example the chapter “The Water Man” in Prophet of the Badlands came out of thin air while I was writing it. I hadn’t planned on it, but I got the scene in my head and it had to happen.

Do you use critique partners or beta readers? Why or why not? Absolutely. Both. One of the things a writer wants most is to be read. Both of these answer that need. In addition, crit partners provide valuable insight and advice and help a writer grow. Granted, one should not jump as soon as one person offers one bit of subjective criticism – but if more than one person has the same thing to say, it’s an opportunity to learn.

How much time do you spend on research? What type of research do you do? So far, my writing has been speculative. Most of my research is limited to my own notes of the world for those. For Caller 107 I made frequent use of mapquest for location references. Also, I got some help on the medical stuff from the sister of a close friend who is a RN (Hi, Donna) to keep the stuff accurate.

A gifted psionic with a troubled past, Kirsten possesses a rare combination of abilities that give her a powerful weapon against spirits. In 2418, rampant violence and corporate warfare have left no shortage of angry wraiths in West City. Most exist as little more than fleeting shadows and eerie whispers in the darkness.

Kirsten is shunned by a society that does not understand psionics, feared by those who know what she can do, and alone in a city of millions. Every so often, when a wraith gathers enough strength to become a threat to the living, these same people rely on her to stop it.

Unexplained killings by human-like androids known as dolls leave the Division One police baffled, causing them to punt the case to Division Zero. Kirsten, along with her partner Dorian, wind up in the crosshairs of corporate assassins as they attempt to find out who – or what – is behind the random murders before more people die.

She tries to hold on to the belief that no one is beyond redemption as she pursues a killer desperate to claim at least one more innocent soul – that might just be hers.

BRoP interview: Robert Gray

Author-2

Welcome to Robert Gray, this week’s Blog Ring of Power guest. Robert is a writer. If that job description doesn’t impress you, how about fantasy writer?  Too general?  Well, he doesn’t get insulted if you call him a horror writer.  If horror’s not your thing, then scratch out horror and replace it with suspense.  And for the kiddies, you can slap on a YA or MG in front of that title.

Gray lives in Bushkill, Pennsylvania, with his wife and two children.

PART 2: THE WRITING LIFE

How do you balance writing with other aspects of your life? I like to do my writing early, before life gets in the way.

How much time per day do you spend on your writing? It depends on my schedule.  I don’t like to focus on time so much as word count, though.  I can sit at a desk for two hours and write a few paragraphs one day and 5000 words another.  If I get 2000 words written a day, I’m satisfied.

What has been the most surprising reaction to something you’ve written? I like when I get thank you letters from children who’ve read the story.  Those emails always brighten my day and are so much better than the advertisements that usually clutter my inbox.

Other than your family, what has been your greatest source of support? It’s amazing how much support you can get from the writing community as a whole–authors, book bloggers, editors–many of them sincerely want to help (not all, but many).

How do you deal with rejection and/or negative reviews? I remind myself that not too long ago I was getting no reviews, which is much worse than the bad ones.

Is your book in print, ebook or both?  Both, though the ebook is currently only available at Amazon.

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000032_00030]EVE HALLOWS AND THE BOOK OF SHIVERS: So far, Eve’s summer vacation has been uneventful, but when her grandparents—traveling all the way from the monster world known as Gravesville—appear at her doorstep, she learns that the URNS Director has gone missing. Worse, a new director, bent on destroying humans, has taken over URNS. Eve and her family are no longer safe in the human world, and as they race to escape this new threat, Eve stumbles into a trap, which forces her back to Gravesville along with her family and friends. But once there, everything goes adorably wrong, and her best chance to get out of this mess is to seek out The Book of Shivers and the elusive author Sedrick Creach—the only creature who knows the secrets of the Nightmare Books. Unfortunately for Eve, searching for Sedrick and the next book in the series will reveal uncomfortable details about her own murky past. Once again, Eve and her friends find themselves on an incredible adventure—one that involves underground battles with bloodthirsty creatures, a lightning-fueled train, and some unexpected new allies. Hilarious and bone-chilling, this third book continues the story of an unlikely hero trying to save not one, but two worlds … This time around, though, Eve’s not sure she can even save herself.
