BRoP interview: Tiffany Heiser

TIffany HeiserWelcome to Tiffany Heiser, this week’s featured author! Don’t miss the earlier posts with the rest of Tiffany’s Blog Ring of Power interview:

  • Part 1 @ Emily – Friday, June 8
  • Part 2 @ Sandra – Monday, June 11
  • Part 3 @ Dean – Tuesday, June 12
  • Part 4 @ Terri– Wednesday, June 13

About Tiffany: I grew up in Granbury,Texas. Always reading or writing from a young age. An only child- I’m not spoiled rotten…I think. Have two wonderful parents that pushed to me to reach my goals. I now live in Fort Worth with my wonderful husband and my two loving dogs(a corgi and a doxiepoo).
I started off with poetry and then short stories. Then decided at the end of last year that I would sit down and write. So I did.
As a kid I wanted to be a doctor(hate blood), an astronaut(scared to get stuck in space), a teacher(don’t want to be stuck with a whole class to myself) and then it dawned on me one day. I want to write. I want to be an author. I love young adult fantasy fiction and knew that’s the genre I would pick. Once I put the pen to paper…the rest as they say… is history 🙂

Part 5: WORDS OF WISDOM
BRoP: Tell us about your route to success- how/when did you decide to self-publish? Did you query an agent first? How did you handle the editing, proofreading, cover design, etc.-
Tiffany: I decided to to self-publish when I queried an agent and received a response back- not about my writing, but about vampires being blacklisted and that I really wouldn’t have a shot especially with my genre. I knew I loved vampires still and wanted to keep reading about them. And of course I wanted to write about them, and I figured there had to be others still interested. So, I looked into self-pub and stayed up till the sun rose almost every day for a week to prepare Bonded With Love for the online shelves.

Editing and proofreading- I found Agent Query Connect and met a lot of authors and made a lot of friends along the way. Proofreaders to help with the process, beta readers, and even a few editors.

Cover design- I worked again with Tabitha Harkins. She produced beautiful photos and I put together the background. I love the cover of Bonded because Rena’s look is so torn and it shows the two sides of what she is to become. It could have used some flare, but it still portrayed what I wanted to get across.

Everything else in the process came together at wee hours in the morning and within a few days Bonded was out there for the public and I couldn’t be prouder of my baby. Ha!

BRoP: What tools are must-haves for writers?

Tiffany: Hmmm. Well, for me specifically- notebooks in every room, your favorite pens attached to each, your type of music ready to played at any time. I would also again recommend agentqueryconnect.com, finding beta-readers, join twitter, and make sure you have a nice quiet place to run away to so you can fully concentrate.

BRoP: Do you have any advice for other writers?

Tiffany: Believe in yourself and your talent. If you are 100% in love with writing and creating stories for others and are willing to sit down and take the time to write it out, then don’t give up. Never give up and don’t let negative reviews or comments let you sway from what you love. You can only get better as time goes on and you never know what the future holds for you.

BRoP: Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Tiffany: Well first and foremost THANK YOU!! Thank you for reading, thank you for enjoying, and thank you for being awesome! Without you Bonded With Love wouldn’t be where it is and I wouldn’t be the happiest author ever. Ha! And I can’t wait to see what you think of book 2 🙂

BRoP: What are your current/future projects?

Tiffany: Well right now book 2 Struggled With Love is undergoing edits. And I have started a new dark vampire novel that also includes angels. Very excited about it 🙂 So many ideas running through this mind…ready to show you all.

Bonded with Love

Never in a trillion years did Rena really think vampires existed…or that she had enemies among them.

Beginning of senior year, and Rena Vesten is hoping for something incredible to happen. She never expected that the dark-haired, blue-eyed man of her dreams-literally-to suddenly appear as the new student at school.

The gorgeous mystery guy, Cryder, has more secrets than his inexplicable presence in her dreams. Soon Rena’s world takes a turn into the supernatural when she finds out Cryder is a vampire king with a deadly rebellion on his hands, and a destiny irrevocably tied to Rena’s…

…’till death do them part.

Broken Bond

Vampires live a long life and it can appear to be perfect to those who don’t have the option for immortality, but when your sanity and place in society is dependent on the one you love- the thought of eternity can be excruciating.

When Bristol finds his true blood-mate at an early age, the girl who knows him to the deepest part of his soul- everything seems perfect. He pictures a future of only the two of them with no rules or limitations, but one terrifying night all of those dreams are stolen from him.

What happens to a vampire when it goes insane?

Venus transit today

venus_transit_6-8-2004

Venus transit 6-8-2004 -- Image source: Wikipedia Commons via EarthSky.org

The last transit of Venus in this century will be visible in the U.S. today (June 5), with web coverage starting around 5 p.m. EDT. Online viewing options include:

  • Spaceweather.com’s realtime gallery will offer constantly updated images of the transit. Another photo-stream of interest comes from the International Space Station where Don Pettit will be the first man in history to photograph a Venus transit from space. There are also many live webcasts of the transit from locations around the world: #1, #2, #3, #4.

  • Slooh.com will broadcast 10 free, real-time feeds of the Venus transit live from solar telescopes in Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Hawaii, Norway, Arizona, and New Mexico.
  • The Exploratorium in San Francisco will show the transit on large screens during museum hours, and others worldwide can watch it via their live feed.
  • Bareket Observatory in Israel will offer a Live Venus transit page. They say you’ll be automatically transferred to the live images, during the event.
  • Astronomers Without Borders will stream the event live to a worldwide audience from historic Mount Wilson Observatory in Southern California.

A chart with local times for the transit across the globe are available at Astronomy.com.

EarthSky.org has a great explanation of why a Venus transit is so rare, including illustrations (at the bottom of the article).

How to safely view 6/5 Venus transit

Here are some safe options for viewing Tuesday’s rare Venus transit of the Sun, reprinted from EarthSky.org:

Indirect viewing. Creating a pinhole camera is another great option, because it lets families and friends get a good view of the transit together. We recommend this article by the masters of do-it-yourself science at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. Their article on how to view solar eclipses safely teaches you to make an easy pinhole projector. With it, you can shine the sun’s image onto a flat surface and impress your friends and neighbors while giving everyone (including yourself) an unforgettable experience.

Online viewing. Obviously, this method is the one of choice if the 2012 transit of Venus takes place when it is nighttime outside for you. The disadvantage here is that you won’t have the fun of seeing the event with your family, friends and neighbors. But any view of the last transit of Venus in this century is better than none. Online viewing options include:

  • Slooh.com put on a fantastic show for the May 20-21, 2012 solar eclipse. They’ll be broadcasting 10 free, real-time feeds of the Venus transit live from solar telescopes in Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Hawaii, Norway, Arizona, and New Mexico.
  • The Exploratorium in San Francisco will be showing the transit on large screens during museum hours, and others worldwide can watch it via their live feed.
  • Bareket Observatory in Israel is offering a Live Venus transit page. They say you’ll be automatically transfered to the live images, during the event.
  • Astronomers Without Borders will stream the event live to a worldwide audience from historic Mount Wilson Observatory in Southern California.

On the afternoon of June 5, people across North America will have a chance to see Venus pass in front of the Sun for the second and final time this century. Our sister planet previously crossed the solar disk eight years ago, in June 2004, but it won’t do so again until December 2117. Read more….

BRoP: Interview with Jacqueline Seewald

It’s my pleasure to introduce this week’s Blog Ring of Power author, Jacqueline Seewald, a friend I met through publisher L&L Dreamspell author’s group. Jacquie has a broad range of writing success, including a story in the TOUCHED BY WONDER anthology that was nominated for a Nebula Award.  A multiple award-winning author, Jacquie has taught creative, expository and technical writing at the university level as well as high school English. She also worked as an academic librarian and an educational media specialist. Eleven of her books of fiction have been published. Her short stories, poems, essays, reviews and articles have appeared in hundreds of diverse publications. She enjoys spending time with family and friends when she isn’t writing. In addition, she is a playwright, a landscape artist and loves many types of music.

Be sure to check out the rest of her BRoP interview

  • Part 4 @ Dean – Tuesday, June 5
  • Part 5 @ Terri– Wednesday, June 6

Jacqueline SeewaldABOUT YOU

BRoP: How long have you been writing?

JS: I’ve been writing since elementary school. I wrote my first short story in fourth grade.

BRoP: When and why did you begin writing?

JS: My mother was a reader who treasured books, and she made walking to the library a great adventure and pleasure for me as a child. She was a great role model. I started reading early and it made me eager to write my own stories.

BRoP: When did you first consider yourself a professional writer?

JS: The first time I actually got paid for a piece of writing made me feel like a professional writer. It was a short mystery story published in England’s The London Mystery Selection. I was thrilled.

BRoP: What books have most influenced your life?

JS: A great many books have influenced my life. I read constantly. I would say my favorite romance novel is still Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. I love Shakespeare as well. Of course, Bible stories were also influential. The story of Ruth remains an all-time favorite of mine.

DeathLegacyBRoP: What genre do you write?

JS: I don’t write in one genre. I enjoy being creative and experimenting with many different types and styles of writing. I write novels, short stories, plays, poetry, and nonfiction. I write for adults, YA and children. I write mystery, romance, horror, science fiction and fantasy. I also write literary stories. Many times I combine several genres.

BRoP: What is your favorite theme/genre to write about?

JS: My Kim Reynolds novels combine mystery with romance and the paranormal. Kim is a librarian with psychic abilities. She hates these abilities and does her best to repress them, but they just keep coming back to haunt her, as do the spirits of dead people who connect with her. The series begins with THE INFERNO COLLECTION which is available in hardcover and large print in many libraries all over the English speaking world and in all ebook formats from L&L Dreamspell. THE DROWNING POOL is also available in libraries and as an ebook, but also as a paperback from Harlequin Worldwide Mystery. The third novel in the series, THE TRUTH SLEUTH, is available in hardcover as well as large print and will come out as a paperback from Worldwide in 2013 along with THE INFERNO COLLECTION. I intend to continue the series. I feel very connected to the main characters.

BRoP: If you couldn’t be an author, what would your ideal career be?

JS: I am a retired teacher, have taught English at the university, high school and middle school levels. I enjoyed that very much. Eventually, I became an academic reference librarian at Rutgers and also an educational media specialist. But writing has always been in my blood.

Too close for comfort: Asteroid flyby today

A small asteroid is flying past Earth today inside the orbit of geosynchronous satellites and only 14,000 km above the surface of our planet. Named “2012 KT42,” the 3- to 10-meter wide space rock ranks #6 on the top-20 list of known close-approachers to Earth, which makes it significant despite its small size.  More information and images may be found on http://spaceweather.com .

BRoP Interview: Sally Franklin Christie

Sally ChristieToday I’m very pleased to welcome Sally Franklin Christie for Part 2 of our Blog Ring of Power interview.

Don’t miss the rest of her interview:

  • Part 1 @ Terri– Wednesday, May 23
  • Part 3 @ Emily – Friday, May 25
  • Part 4 @ Sandra – Monday, May 28
  • Part 5 @ Dean – Tuesday, May 29

Part 2: The Writing Life

What is your writing process? Do you follow a regular routine? Do you use pen and paper or computer? Work at home or at the library/Starbucks, etc. I work at home in my Big Bird Nest.  If it is November and I am participating in NaNoWriMo I get up before the sun and write until 2000 words have passed.  The rest of the time, I hit and miss.

How do you balance writing with other aspects of your life?  I mostly work writing in, when I can.  I am a marketing manager for Damnation Books & Eternal Press and spend a lot of time marketing other authors’ books.  My external obligations go first.  Writing is frosting on the gluten free cupcake.

When do you write? If I can define writing as the act of communication, I do it a lot.  I also paint landscapes and crochet.  Writing is one of my creative outlets.

What has been the most surprising reaction to something you’ve written? One time I sent a manuscript to a woman who said she would look it over in exchange for a tarot reading.  I had worked on it for a long time.  I got the manuscript back in the mail with these words scrawled across the title page – “This must have been your first draft.”  I didn’t write fiction for a long time.

Other than your family, what has been your greatest source of support? The participants over at The Writer’s Chatroom have kept me going.  They cheer me on.  They hold the dustpan when I’ve been shattered.

How do you deal with rejection and/or negative reviews? Oh, dear.  A bad review.  If possible I simply thank the reviewer and if the remarks have merit I work on those things in the next novel.  After a novel is out it simply is – I can’t very well take it back from my readers.  So, I try to address the issues in my next novel.  Being able to handle bad remarks is a sign of a professional.  Being graceful is another mark of a good author.  Thank everyone, every time.  Thank anyone who takes time to read your words.

Is your book in print, ebook or both? Both are available in e-format and print.
