Tell us about your new book and when it is out? Where can people purchase it? Games of Adversaries” is a story about contrasts. The easy answer is – who wouldn’t have fun writing a novel where you take an advanced space-faring telepathic race, and dump one of the protagonists into a medieval setting? You take the opposing point of views and the confusion of culture and wham! You have a story.

It is the subtext which is more difficult to answer. There are often misconceptions both about soldiers and war. Today it is 2012 where many people in western countries have no true idea about either. Children grow up in peace and plenty and have no concept of war other than via video games. Remembrance Day has to argue with Christmas decorations because, well, who wants to listen to old soldiers carping on about their exploits? Because people forget far too easily why they are living in peace and plenty. War to most people is the more insidious war on terror. 911, railway stations being blown up. But for the majority it doesn’t touch them.

And I might have been the same if my son hadn’t joined the military. I always had huge respect for my family members who were in WW2. I could never imagine what they went through, because so few of them truly talk about it. You only get to see the sanitized version on TV or movies. It is never reality, or rarely. So even though this novel was began before Rich joined up, it was always a subject which interested me. It also interested me how far a person would go to survive and how it might change them and those around them. And although “Games” is pure story, it questions some of those contexts

Is there anything new, unusual, or interesting about your book? How is it different from other books on the same subject? It takes some of our very deep-seated fears about who we are and lays them on the line.

What was the hardest part of writing this book? Putting characters through hell. Living it with them

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why? The chapter where Yiahan rial Krais has fun disguising himself as a very arty-farty dancer with appropriate mannerisms and terrible accent. Because every novel needs its lighter moments.

Did you learn anything from writing this book and what was it? Every novel is a learning curve. Learning to weave not only subtext but sheer story in a manner that keeps it flowing and interesting.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in this book? I would, I think, have made it considerably longer.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp? Yes, but not a hit over the head one. The subtext is to make people think about PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome) and why soldiers suffer from it.

Tell us about your book’s cover – where did the design come from and what was the design process like? My publisher designed the cover to show the contrasts within the story. Barbarian warrior below and a crashed spaceship above. The women on the cover represent what both men fight for.

The Blog Ring of Power Year in Review Presents…
Sandra Saidak

Sandra Saidak

Hi, everyone!  I hope your holidays were or are still, very happy.

2012 was a very special year for me, because it was the year I found my feet and actually set out on this journey as a published author.  Uffington Horse Press began on November 19. 2011, so perhaps the biggest event of 2012 was celebrating my one-year anniversary as a self-published author.  My first novel was Daughter of the Goddess Lands, a story set in the late Neolithic Age, dealing with the conflict between peaceful, Goddess-worshiping farmers and patriarchal nomadic warriors.

When my chance to appear on the Blog Ring of Power came along, I had just released my second novel, Shadow of the Horsemen.  A sequel to Daughter of the Goddess Lands, it continued the adventures of Kalie, a survivor of an early attack from the first book, now living as a slave (read “spy”) among her people’s killers, as she works to find the means to defeat the horsemen before they can destroy the Goddess lands.

The Ring of Power was great, both for the exposure it gave me and my budding writing career, and the people, books and websites it introduced me to.  I was told when I began this crazy venture that the internet, and the people on it, are what has made self- publishing possible.  Events like this one helped to me to see that, up close and personal.

2012 came with an extra challenge, in the form of a change at work.  For the past three years, I had been an Independent Studies teacher at the high school I teach at, working with students for whom the regular classroom experience doesn’t work.  It was a low-stress kind of job that allowed me a lot of free time—most of which went into my writing.

Daughter of the Goddess Lands

Shadow of the HorsemenThis fall, I returned to the classroom, teaching World History and English.  I now spend evenings and weekends grading papers and planning lessons.  So, juggling writing, publishing and marketing with all that has proved to be a real challenge.  (Did I mention I actually do juggling for real?  Maybe that’s why I’m able to get it all done…)

The Big News for the end of 2012 will be the release of my third book.  Not Book 3 of Kalie’s Journey, unfortunately (that one should be out by the end of 2013), but a collection of short stories.  “In the Balance” will (hopefully!) be available in the last week of 2012, and will include a novelette set in the Kalie’s Journey universe, as well as nine other stories which span my writing career.  My first professional sale will be included, as well as two stories written specifically for Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Sword and Sorceress contest.  While, sadly, Ms. Bradley left us in 1999, she left behind a wonderful body of science fiction and fantasy, and through her wonderful contest, helped start the careers of many aspiring authors.  To anyone who has not read her writings, or the Sword and Sorceress anthologies, I suggest you go to Amazon (or your local bookstore, if you still have one in your area) and get introduced.

That’s all from me.  I hope everyone has a wonderful 2013.  And if any of you discover my work, and like it, I hope to hear from you in the new year.

Join our End of World Age celebration!

Reprinted from TownandCountry-Manchester PATCH

Do you think something big is in store for Dec. 21, 2012? So do several local businesses, which have scheduled ‘end of the world’ events to coincide with the turning of the Mayan calendar this Friday.

Wired Coffee hosts a book signing with Chesterfield author T.W. Fendley, whose science-fiction work “Zero Time” mixes Mayan prophecy with time travel. Meet her at the Sunset Hills coffee shop from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., 3860 S. Lindbergh Blvd.

Fendley doesn’t think doomsday is headed our way, but does believe the date indicates the beginning of a new time cycle.

“It started out as a book signing, but I wanted it to be more than that, because it really is a time to celebrate,” she said. “I got to thinking, ‘What can we do to make it more festive?’”

She’s enlisted the talents of spiritualist Rhonda Leifheit and musician John MacEnulty. Leifheit will be speaking on Mayan principles, including the “galactic alignment.” Former conductor MacEnulty will lead a drum circle “resonating with the new energies of the changing times,” according Fendley’s website.

Interview #4: Susan Kaye Quinn
The Mindjack Series
2012: A Year of Independent Publishing
2012 was a life-changing year for me, largely due to that string of covers at the top of this post. This is the year (actually starting in Nov. 2011) that I self-published my YA science fiction trilogy (plus novellas), and it has radically changed my ideas about how to succeed as an author.
First came Open Minds, the story of a future world where everyone reads minds, except one girl. Of course I hoped that people would enjoy the story, but I was frankly stunned by the response. People were excited about the book! Book bloggers enthusiastically accepted it for review, sales steadily climbed, and readers started telling me things like:
I was already busy writing the sequel, Closed Hearts, but the reader response made that process even more exciting… and terrifying. Would they like the next book? Now readers had expectations – could I fulfill them? When I published Closed Hearts in May 2012, I’ll admit I was somewhat of a nervous wreck. But not only did readers enjoy the book, but that was when sales really took off. Open Minds was now regularly in the Top 100 Science Fiction books on Amazon, and notes like this started to pour in:
Even before Closed Hearts was published, I had already started writing the third book in the Trilogy, Free Souls. But during the process of writing that book, I also wrote three novellas, which were independent Mindjack Origins stories, told from the viewpoint of secondary characters in the novels. It was a great way to flesh out some of my secondary characters, to provide bonus material for people enjoying the books, and to experiment with the short story form – something that’s really only viable now that ebooks are so readily available. I had fully embraced the indie revolution at this point, and wanted to see what cool things I could do with it. Readers seemed to like it too:
Along the way, I connected with award winning director Beth Spitalny, and together with an amazing cast and crew, we’ve made a live-action trailer for the Mindjack Trilogy. I flew to NYC for an incredible day on location for the shoot, and experience I will never forget.
Soon (before Christmas), both the Mindjack Trailer and Free Souls will be released. I can honestly say that Free Souls is my favorite book of the series. I hope that readers will think so as well!
2013: A Year of Independent Writing

One thing that self-publishing has taught me is that there are no limits to what you can write. There’s an incredible freedom in being indie that allows you to write and publish anything your heart desires – the worst thing that will happen is that no one will read it (which is like a stab to the chest for any writer, but there’s always another story to write). In that spirit, I’ve decided to write exactly the stories that move me, and hope that they will move readers as well. Here are the projects on my production schedule for 2013:

Third Daughter – Steampunk Fantasy Romance – The technology is more retro and the romance more “steamy” than Mindjack, but this steampunk dalliance is my “for fun” novel, in between my more serious science fiction series (Mindjack and Singularity). Not that it’s comedic – there’s political intrigue, fights with swords, sinister dirigible weaponry, and a struggle for the hand of the Third Daughter of the Queen… and the fate of the world as she knows it. This novel should release sometime early 2013.

Singularity – Young Adult Science Fiction – The unnamed first novel of this multi-part series will revolve around a future world that is post-Singularity (the Singularity is the event horizon when computers become more intelligent than humans). I’ve plotted out the series, but won’t start writing until after the first of the year. I think this series will appeal to fans of the Mindjack novels, with plenty of cool technology and future world dreaming, all told through the viewpoint of a legacy human boy. [For a sneak peek at what this series will look like, I wrote a flash fiction piece for Christmas set in this world – see My Books tab on my blog.] The first Singularity novel will likely be released in the second half of 2013.

The Faery Swap – Middle Grade Fantasy – I love writing middle grade (ages 8-12), but since indie publishing isn’t amenable to MG, I’ll be querying this novel the old-fashioned way, once I revise it. It’s a Prince and the Pauper meets Artemis Fowl fantasy told from the alternating viewpoints of a human boy and the warrior faery who tricks him into swapping places. I hope to have this revised and off to query in the first half of 2013.

So much writing, so little time. But I couldn’t dream of a better problem to have.

BRoP interview: Sue Bolich

SABolichWelcome to Sue Bolich, this week’s Blog Ring of Power guest. I met Sue on Broad Universe, where she recently shared the news that she is battling cancer, and the medical bills are piling up.  Please help Sue and show your support by purchasing her novels as every little bit of financial help is desperately needed.

Don’t miss the rest of her interview at:

  • Part 1: Monday, Dec. 3, About You– Sandra
  • Part 2: Tuesday, Dec. 4, The Writing Life–Dean
  • Part 3: Wednesday, Dec. 5,The Creative Process–Terri
  • Part 5: Friday, Dec. 7, Words of Wisdom– Emily

PART 4: ABOUT YOUR CURRENT WORK

BRoP: Tell us about your new book and when it is out? Where can people purchase it?

Sue: Seaborn will be the third in the Masters of the Elements series. It is a total departure from a lot of fantasy epics, because there is no swords and sorcery-type magic. It’s all about the battle between talented human clans and the living elements they are tasked to control. In the case of Water, however, the journey is not about trying to figure out how to master Water, but to find out what she wants. Wind and Fire have been rebelling against Earth Mother. Is Water with them or against them, and why? Will she help save the earth or keep herself to herself and let her siblings do what they want? It’s been an interesting writing journey thus far. Seaborn will be out in Spring 2013 and you’ll be able to buy it anywhere.

BRoP:  Is there anything new, unusual, or interesting about your book? How is it different from toher books on the same subject?

Sue:I know people have written fantasy about elementals before but I haven’t read any of them so I’m not sure how they’re different. These books are different from most fantasy in that there is no “villain” or evil overlord or great quest McGuffin to recover in order to save the world. These books are full of people who must learn to work together against all their instincts and even their Mother-given talents in order to save the places and people they love. There are people to love and people to hate here, but no one is really out to dominate the world, only try to save it, rather stubbornly, in ways they think they understand and that should work. But sometimes they don’t, and that makes for a great and continuing source of conflict. Imagine Firedancers trying to work with Windriders, who can wave their hand and bring swooping in masses of the thing Fire wants most. Imagine Watermasters coming off their ships trying to understand landbound problems that have never applied to them before, but must be solved or everyone dies. I’m having lots of fun writing these, more than I expected.

BRoP:  What was the hardest part of writing this book?

Sue: Firedancer, the first book in this series, was written as a standalone. When my publisher asked to see some of my work, I sent it to her because it was the closest thing I had ready to go in the drawer at the time. But…she wanted series—at least three books. So, I had to find a way to spin out the storyline to encompass a much bigger arc engaging all of the Earth Mother’s elemental children: Fire, Wind, Water, and eventually the Mother herself. Tall order! Thank goodness my subconscious enjoys puzzles.

BRoP: Did you learn anything from writing this book and what was it?

Sue: It’s made me stop and listen to the world again, absorbing the sounds and smells and sights around me. I am basically creating four different societies by focusing each book on a different talented clan, and each is tied to the world in a different way. Finding names in the sound of water was…interesting.

BRoP: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Sue: That the things you think are important aren’t usually the ones that are, and that reaching a greater goal is sometimes an exercise in getting over yourself.

BRoP: Is your book in print, ebook or both?

Sue: Both

BRoP: Please let us know where can your readers stalk you:

Firedancer

FIREDANCER:  What do you suppose that fire thinks about as it cooks your dinner behind its cage of containment stone? Jetta ak’Kal knows–but no one listens to a Firedancer who has failed to protect her assigned village from an assault by living flame. The Ancient, the strange, elemental fire imprisoned at the heart of the world, took her lifemate, her reputation as the most talented Dancer of her generation, and nearly her life. Now her clan demands she redeem herself, yet seem strangely indifferent to her insistence that the Dance itself that has always bound the Ancient seems to be failing. Assigned to Annam, a village with no previous experience of fire, Jetta and her new partner, Settak, find themselves battling the naive ignorance of the villagers, the hostility of arrogant Windriders whose mastery of air could kill them both with the flick of a finger, and occasionally each other as they struggle to find new and more powerful forms of the Dance. Pursued by fire crawling up through every crack, by a new love she does not want, and a nagging suspicion that there is more to her assignment than her clan bothered to tell her, Jetta must forge unprecedented alliances in this high and beautiful place before the Ancient breaks free–for if it does, there will no longer be anything left to fight for.

WINDRIDER: “Leave singing to the Hag to Fifth Ranks, lad, if you don’t want to end up a witless madman shrieking to the storm from a cell in the Tower of Winds.”
Good advice, all in all. Sheshan ak’Kal lives to regret that he did not heed it. Desperate to remember the windsong that once let him sing even the great storms off the sea to tatters, he forgets for one foolish moment of shared rage that Wind’s gentle sister is the angry, vengeful–and quite insane–Hag.
With the Hag stalking him across Metrenna, singing a wild, terrible note that only he can hear, Sheshan discovers that weaving torrents of living air between his hands is no longer enough to keep her at bay. For his clan, his life, and a fragile new love he has found with the most unexpected of women, Sheshan must learn a new song, and become what none of his people have managed in millennia–a Windrider indeed.
