BRoP interview: Kelsey Jordan

KelseyJordan-2Welcome to Kelsey Jordan, this week’s Blog Ring of Power guest! Like everyone, Kelsey has her share of vices. They typically center around sinful frappes made with Blue Bell Coffee ice cream, late nights hanging out with her demanding muse, spending an embarrassing amount of time reading, and napping.

When she isn’t indulging in her love of books, music, late nights with her muse, and delicious, but fattening frappes, she is spending time with her hubby and daughter.

Please let us know where your readers can stalk you:

PART #2: THE WRITING LIFE

When do you write? I’m a night owl, or at least my muse is. I can’t focus too well during the day.

What has been the most surprising reaction to something you’ve written? I’ve heard people crying after a scene in the first book. I was baffled to the point I had to ask where they started crying, because I didn’t think I wrote anything so emotional. Then again, I’ve written book two already and I bawled like a baby during one of the scenes I wrote.

What is the strongest criticism you’ve ever received as an author? The best compliment? Worst: being told to take out a scene I thought was soooo important. (It wasn’t.) Best: When is the next one coming out? That’s something I’ll never get tired of hearing.

Other than your family, what has been your greatest source of support? That would have to be my bestie, Dominque (ßThat’s the w=right way to spell her name lol). She’s awesome and skewers me when I write something terrible. I swear I fight with her over my book. It’s awesome.

How do you deal with rejection and/or negative reviews? I take the constructive parts of the review and decide if I can use it. Negative reviews that seem like it’s done with malice don’t get my attention. Either way, I don’t respond. It’s a no win situation.

Kyran of the Blue Ridge Pack has spent most of his life searching for an end to the Forever War. Finding a Hunter among their greatly diminished ranks who was willing to forgo their “shoot first” mentality was harder than it seemed. Then fate—or the gods—gifted him with Alexis James, a petite Hunter with a nasty habit for killing his kind and a need for his surgical skills.

Is your book in print, ebook or both? The book is available in both formats.
The Lycan Hunter Book Cover 2 6x9-2

THE LYCAN HUNTER: Alexis only has two wishes in life: make it through her next assignment, or die a relatively quick death. With a heart hardened by miserable circumstances and painful memories, her view of kindness and common decency was marred by scars of swift retribution. So when the blue-eyed Lycan saw fit to save her life, she wondered: At what cost?

After eight thousand years of war, the end is becoming a reality, but is the possibility of peace worth Kyran’s soul and possibly Alexis’ life?

Check out Rhonda Leifheit’s classes in Feb & March!

LeifheitPAST LIFE REGRESSION: The Soul’s Journey Through Time

Sat. Feb. 1, 9:30-noon for 2 weeks at 2726 Ellendale Ave.

The theory of reincarnation holds that one lifetime is not enough to remember our true spiritual nature. The soul is immortal and learns through a variety of experiences in many lifetimes. The exploration of past lives gives insight to our present problems, and inspiration to our present purpose. In this workshop participants will:

* Discover how patterns from past lives can influence present health, character, relationships, finances, talents, and self-worth.

* Appreciate your soul-strengths, which can include natural talents, creative gifts, and unique abilities.

* Experience a group guided regression to a past life. (The first week will be a brief regression as preparation for a longer regression in week 2.)

* Learn how knowledge of past lives can heal limiting beliefs, emotional wounds, relationship issues, and more.

This class can be a wonderful opportunity to discover if you are a good subject for individual Past Life Regression, which will allow for deeper exploration and healing.

Fee: $60

To Register: Call Rhonda at 644-0641, mail payment to address below.

Location: 2726 Ellendale Ave., St. Louis 63143.

EMPATHS, INTUITIVES & SENSITIVES

Wed., Feb. 5, 6:30 – 8:30 P.M. for 4 weeks at Mystic Valley

These terms can all be used to describe individuals whose unique gifts are much needed in today’s world. But these gifts are not always appreciated or understood—by ourselves or others. If you’ve ever been called “too sensitive” (or have felt that way yourself) this class will help you appreciate your empathic gifts, and learn ways to energetically protect yourself from negative influences.

Dr. Judith Orloff describes empaths as “finely tuned instruments”. According to Elaine Aron, approximately 20% of the population have highly attuned or “sensitive” nervous systems. (From The Highly Sensitive Person)

See if you relate to some these qualities:

Do you empathize with others and want to ease their suffering?

Are you intuitive about people’s feelings?

Do you have vivid and/or intuitive dreams?

Are you highly sensitive to noises, smells, or crowds?

Do you have chronic physical pain or symptoms that are hard to diagnose?

Are you an emotional “sponge” or are your nerves easily “frayed”?

Do you feel recharged and refreshed by having time alone at home or in nature?

Are you an energy worker? Spiritually inclined? Music lover? Poet? Writer?

This class will help you identify and appreciate your strengths and challenges:

* Develop action steps to prevent energy drain or negative influences.

* Empower yourself with knowledge and strategies to take care of yourself.

* Accentuate your spiritual gifts.

* Learn ways to use your insights and feelings for greater clarity, health, happiness, and service to others.

Fee: $80.

To Register: Call 314-645-3336. (For questions about class content call Rhonda at 644-0641.) Send payment to Mystic Valley:

Kimberly Schneider: Uncommon wisdom leads to transformational change

KimberlySchneider-2Guest post by Kimberly Schneider

Most people who engage me for Life and Business Alchemy coaching, attend my programs, or read my books are looking to make some sort of change.

You might believe that change is hard, and that it takes a long time. And I suppose that’s true–if you follow the common wisdom about how to create change (you know: set goals; take action toward those goals; work hard; no pain, no gain…yada yada)

But if you want to experience transformational change right now, then the common wisdom is wrong. In order to bring about transformational change, you need uncommon wisdom.

The uncommon wisdom I’m talking about is not new. In fact, it’s been around for ages. It’s just that hardly anyone actually applies it. Mystics, shamans, radical rabbis, medicine women, monks, druids and priestesses have been saying it forever: Change your consciousness; change your life.

But how do you DO that? Ah, here’s where we see the importance of asking the right question. Because, by focusing on doing, we’re back to the well-worn path of common wisdom.

Uncommon wisdom tells us that DO-ing is far less important than the BE-ingness out of which the doing arises.  In other words, you must first connect with your Source, the Essence of All that Is, the Divine Wisdom that lives in you, and BE that, just for a moment.

When you re-member who you are in this way, you realize that all the external things you thought you needed to change (including how much money you make, the state of your relationships, your habits, your career, how much you weigh…you get the idea now, right?) are irrelevant.

Because all of those things are only manifestations of your inner state of being. And who you are in any given moment changes everything.

So here’s an example of the sorts of questions that transform consciousness:

  • Who do I want to BE?
  • And what would THAT PERSON do, right now?

Far out, huh? You don’t have to take my word for this. Just play around with it and watch what happens.

And if you are going to DO anything today, do whatever you need to do that allows your natural state of wonder and receptivity to emerge. And then, from that state of wonder and receptivity, follow wherever you’re led. It’s magic.

For me, on this frigid winter day, that means dancing around my family room to Talking Heads, Johnny Cash and Modern English (how do the words “Burning Down the House” “Ring of Fire” or “Melt with You” sound right now, if you’re digging out from that Polar Vortex?)

May the fire of your creative spirit lead you into the life you love!

And if you have any interest in playing around with these ideas in company with me and a couple of hilarious, joy-filled, ultra-talented Irish singing/songwriting brothers, come to our Celtic Spirituality Retreat on March 8th!

We’ll have a transformational day of wonder together. If you want to make a weekend out of it, the night before the retreat you can come to the sure-to-be-brilliant concert featuring the lads I mentioned (Owen and Moley O’Suilleabhain). The location where the retreat and the concert are being held (the gorgeous Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet) even has some accommodations available, if you’re coming in from out of town. Find out all the details here: http://togetherinfaithseries.com/2014/01/02/march-7-8-celtic-soul-experience-2/

Hope to see you there!

BRoP interview: Terri Bruce

Terri Bruce Author Pic SecondaryWelcome to this week’s special guest, Terri Bruce! In addition to being the author of a fascinating new fiction series brought to you from the afterlife, Terri is the founder of The Blog Ring of Power (BRoP).

Today is also the first day of a new format on the BRoP – interviews will now be posted on Mondays and all five parts will be posted on the same day. We hope this makes it easier for you to access the whole interview.

TERRI BRUCE has been making up adventure stories for as long as she can remember and won her first writing award when she was twelve. Like Anne Shirley, she prefers to make people cry rather than laugh, but is happy if she can do either. She produces fantasy and adventure stories with a literary bent from a haunted house in New England where she lives with her husband and three cats. Her second novel, Thereafter (Afterlife #2), will be released May 1, 2014.

This is Part One of a five-part interview. Be sure to check out the other BRoP sites for the rest of the interview:

PART 1: ABOUT YOU

Tell us a little about yourself—how did you get started writing? What was the first thing you ever wrote? I’ve always written; in grade school, they had us write a story every year, which we then made into a book – we printed it neatly on nice paper, drew pictures to accompany the story, and then sewed it all together with a cardboard wrapped in wall paper for covers. I think that was my favorite thing we did all year and I still have those stories (thanks Mom for keeping them!). It wasn’t until 2001, however, that I really set out to write a novel “for real,” and that’s when I started working steadily toward becoming a professional author.

How many published works do you have? One work, published twice 🙂 (and a second book “oh-so-close” to having been published last May that will be coming out this May).

What genre do you write? I write science fiction and fantasy with a literary bent (kinda like The Time Traveler’s Wife, Cloud of Sparrows, or The Night Circus).

What is your favorite theme/genre to write about? I’m fascinated by a lot of things—the world is a source of endless wonder to me—and so I tend to hop around, exploring various subjects through my writing. I’ve explored identity and truth in my first (still unpublished) novel, Say It Three Times. In the Afterlife Series, I explore afterlife mythology, the nature of love and friendship, and learning to accept our own weaknesses. I have a science fantasy in the works that is about survival, identity, and dealing with mortality, and a historical fiction on the backburner that is about the Bread and Roses strike. So…yeah. There’s really not one common theme to my work. My stories are always character-driven and more toward the literary end of the spectrum, but beyond that, it’s hard to say there’s a particular theme or genre.

Outside of writing, what is the best part of being an author? The worst part? The best part—when someone tells me they liked my book! That’s my most favorite part. Whenever my review request is accepted by a blogger that I really admire—that still remains one of my favorite things. 🙂 Meeting so many awesome people who love books. Having so many people rooting for me during the dispute with my publisher and while I’ve been going through the growing pains of learning to self-publish. Becoming an author has helped me to see just how many kind and generous people there are in the world.

The worst part—writing! LOL! Dorothy Parker famously said, “I hate writing; I love having written,” and that’s me to a T. I also have found that I don’t really like managing the production process (interior layout, editing, etc.). I miss having a publisher do those things for me. Keeping on top of the administrative stuff—chasing down copyright infringement, making sure the book is loaded properly to all the retail sites, social reader sites, etc.

What format is your book(s) available in (print, e-book, audio book, etc.)? Both print (paperback) and all available ebook formats. And I hope that there will soon be an audio book edition!

HEREAFTER (AFTERLIFE #1): Thirty-six-year-old Irene Dunphy didn’t plan on dying any time soon, but that’s exactly what happens when she makes the mistake of getting behind the wheel after a night bar-hopping with friends. She finds herself stranded on ea

rth as a ghost, where the food has no taste, the alcohol doesn’t get you drunk, and the sex…well, let’s just say “don’t bother.” To make matters worse, the only person who can see her—courtesy of a book he found in his school library—is a fourteen-year-old boy genius obsessed with the afterlife.

Unfortunately, what waits in the Great Beyond isn’t much better. Stuck between the boring life of a ghost in this world and the terrifying prospect of three-headed hell hounds, final judgment, and eternal torment in the next, Irene sets out to find a third option—preferably one that involves not being dead anymore. Can she wipe the slate clean and get a second chance before it’s too late?

PART 5: WORDS OF WISDOM

Tell us about your route to success –did you use an agent? How did you land your agent and/or publisher?  Who’s still with me, reading all of this? Comment below so I know. Anyways, I didn’t get an agent. I had a great request rate and a long search, but eventually I ran out of people to query. So I looked at all my options. Yes I could have self-published and done the same but I had no money for an editor or marketing. Plus it wasn’t my dream. I was already talking to Rebecca Hamilton about the self-publishing process, but then my husband suggested I just ask her if she was interested in publishing my book. She’d already read parts of it and loved it, and yup, after finishing it, she did take me on! So that was it for me.

Why did you choose to go with a small/independent press? See above. Really it was about money. They had 50% royalties for the author, and they would invest money in marketing my book. Something I could not do. Plus the professional editing.

Is there anything you would have done differently during the querying and publishing process? Like I said before, just that i had waited longer before querying. I got so impatient, and in the end it cost me two years!

What are the most important elements of good writing? Voice, Emotion, and Technique. By technique, I don’t mean editing. That’s well and good and anyone can learn that. I mean the weaving of a story. The pacing and flow that draws someone in. And you have to keep your reader emotionally invested. They have to feel something or they won’t keep reading. Even if that something is hate; emotion has to be there. And of course, the ever talked about VOICE. If we’ve heard it all before or it doesn’t fit the story, the rest doesn’t matter. So VET guys. VET.

Do you have any advice for other writers? Well, it’s worth about as much as you paid for it, but here’s what I’ll offer: a tip on voice. For me, the voice is its own character. With my first novel, I imagined someone telling a story. What would they know, who recorded it to give those details, and who is their audience?  The voice took on a life of its own. Maybe that’s why people liked it so much. If you are using first person, then this should be easier, but not a pointless endeavor. After all, your voice is still talking to someone. Why? Who? How are they revealing things? Think about this as you’re editing/writing. It helped me at least. Maybe it will help someone else struggling with this.

What do you feel is the key to your success? My support system. No one does this alone. If they say they do, they are giant liars or going nowhere. My husband watched the kids sometimes, made sure I ate, pushed me to keep going. Agent Query Connect pushed me to get better and to become professional. Particularly RC Lewis, Clippership, MarcyKate and Tibby on that forum are ones I remember. But also DCRich, Stephanie Diaz, and MeiNu (not her username, but I call her that). Lots of people just give something to you to help you keep going. And of course Rebecca Hamilton right? She edited my work for free a few times as part of her blog, then later she gave me a shot. She believed in me. So what success would I have without that?

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers? Please be my reader? Sorry for begging. Whoever you are that actually read my story, I love you! Even if you hated it. If you have any questions, ever want to interact with me, I’d love that too. I love hearing if you liked anything in particular. I’ll talk about stuff, listen, whatever. I’ll just be grateful you even exist!

What are your current / future project(s)? I have the sci-fi mentioned above, but I’m also working on a sequel to this book. Just in case you all want more. 😉

Is there anything else you’d like to share? Anyone who has read through all of this is a real gem. Thank you. No matter if you read my book or not. Thanks for listening to me ramble for a while.

THE IMPENDING DEMISE OF THE GIRL WITH BROWN EYES: Even in a world without names, where neighborhoods are built on giant pillars and magic lurks in dark corners of humanity, usual people meet in typical ways—at work or by hiring a matchmaker. Boys do not meet girls sitting on their own headstones, or while running from giant cougar-like creatures. However, the Girl with Brown Eyes is not a usual girl. And the Boy, still with no title, is about to find that out for himself.

The Boy has no idea why mutant beasts keep attacking him. It’s possible he spends too much time strolling through cemeteries. But, maybe these attacks aren’t random at all. Perhaps they are attempted murder, though nobody believes his claims. Yet. That all changes when the Boy plummets off his home pillar while being pursued by a flying monstrosity. The Girl with Brown Eyes is there – if not to save his life, then to at least verify his tale.

Now, unsure if she’s trustworthy or even where she came from, the Boy must make his way back up the pillars and discover who his assailant is . . . lest they learn the dangerous secret of the impending demise of the Girl with Brown Eyes.

BRoP interview: Kelly Oram

BRoP Logo Revised-1Welcome to Kelly Oram, this week’s Blog Ring of Power guest! Kelly wrote her first novel at age fifteen–a fan fiction about her favorite music group, The Backstreet Boys, for which family and friends still tease her. She’s obsessed with reading, talks way too much, and loves to eat frosting by the spoonful. She lives outside of Phoenix, Arizona, with her husband and four children.

PART 2: THE WRITING LIFE

What is your writing process? Do you follow a regular routine? Do you use pen and paper or computer? Work at home or at the library/Starbucks, etc. My laptop is like my 5th child. I usually do a basic out line on paper and then have files filled with notes. I usually write from home but if I need to get out of the house for a bit I love to go to the library. If my small town had a Barnes and Noble or a Starbucks, I’d probably frequent both to get my writing done.

How do you balance writing with other aspects of your life? Balance? I wish!! I go crazy trying to balance everything. If I ever get it figured out, I’ll let you know.

When do you write? I now write full time, so I start in the morning and finish in the evening. But I’ll still work when I have those sleepless nights if I’m not caught up in a good book.

What has been the most surprising reaction to something you’ve written? I was completely floored by the dozens upon dozens of letters I received after I published V is for Virgin. I had so many people write to tell me how much they appreciated that book, and who shared their own personal struggles/stories about virginity. There are some amazing people out there and I was completely flattered and shocked to know that I’d touched their lives in such a way.

Other than your family, what has been your greatest source of support? My husband! I know you said other than my family, but seriously, I couldn’t do it without him. Other than that, I have a small group for friends that will read and give me feedback on all my crappy first drafts of my books. My beautiful betas are more help to me than they know.

How do you deal with rejection and/or negative reviews? I try not to read reviews at all. I try to just focus on the fact that I love my stories and hey, they’re selling…so that’s awesome.

Is your book in print, ebook or both? Both

Strong solar activity erupts

Reprinted from Space Weather News http://spaceweather.com

STRONG SOLAR ACTIVITY:  One of the largest sunspots in years, AR1944, has turned toward  Earth and it is crackling with strong flares.  So far on Jan. 7th, the active region has produced M7- and X1-class eruptions, and more appear to be in the offing.  As this alert is being issued, analysts are waiting for more data from solar observatories to clarify the possibility of CME impacts and geomagnetic storms in the days ahead.  For updates, stay tuned to http://spaceweather.com.

Kimberly Schneider: Happy Epiphany!

KimberlySchneider-3Guest post by Kimberly Schneider

Happy Epiphany!

Do you remember the song “The 12 Days of Christmas?” Well, it’s the 12th day of Christmas today.

Whether or not you celebrate the Christmas season, I think Epiphany is pretty cool.

It’s the celebration of “wise men,” three great mystics/scientists/seers/scholars of the ancient world, coming together from across the globe in a shared recognition of something remarkable: the birth of a new consciousness.

One wonderful aspect of Epiphany, for me, is the reminder that deep spiritual truths transcend cultures and religions. Deep truths unite us; they call us together and expand our awareness.  And that’s certainly worth celebrating!

So Happy Epiphany to all of us.

And if you’re looking to experience epiphanies–new and expanded awarenesses–in your own life this year, I’d love to support you in that process.

If you’re so inclined, here are a few ways we can connect in 2014:

1) Alchemical Coaching.   Alchemy is the ancient wisdom of taking what’s already there, holding it in a particular state of consciousness, and transforming it into something utterly new and magnificent.  Sound magical and fun? It is.  So whether you’re looking to

a. shift your consciousness in a personal situation;

b. take your business in a more expansive direction; or

c.  bring the “6 Ps of Presence” into your professional communication,

call me to set up a brief, complimentary phone session and we’ll explore how we might work together.  I have decades of experience as a licensed professional counselor and business coach, understanding drawn from teaching college and grad. students at Wash U., and countless weird and surprisingly effective tools to bring to the mix.  Let’s see what we could create together. 314-275-8188.

2) Come with us to Ireland this summer! My family and I are going to support another group of spiritual adventurers through a week-long Irish Immersion experience July 12-19, and there are still a few spaces left in the cottages we’ve reserved looking out over Galway Bay.  Want to join us? Find out more at http://www.KimberlySchneider.com/trips

3. Transformational Keynote Speeches and Workshops Custom-Designed for Your Group.  Request a program for your group of any size on a vast range of topics including:

-Navigating through Precarious Times with Grace and Ease

–Dissolving Unconscious Limiting Beliefs

–Displaying the 6 Ps of Presence in Your Presentations

–Crafting Compelling Narratives for Your Life and Business

–Poetry as a Spiritual Practice

–If Everything I Need Is Right Here, Why Can’t I See It?

Programs draw upon: the teachings in my book Everything You Need Is Right Here: Five Steps to Manifesting Magic and Miracles; my CD Terrible Beauty: Poetry and Reflections for Precarious Times; material created for my graduate and undergraduate courses at Washington University and more.

If any of these options intrigue you, just email me back or call 314-275-8188 and we’ll talk.  I look forward to exploring together in this bright and beautiful new year!

May the Feast of the Epiphany support you in seeing the magic already awake in your life,

Love,

Kimberly
