BRoP interview: Ripley Patton

200pxlsWelcome to this week’s Blog Ring of Power guest, Ripley Patton, who lives in Portland, Oregon, with one cat, two teenagers, and a man who wants to live on a boat.

She is an award-winning short story writer and author of The PSS Chronicles, a young adult paranormal thriller series. The first book in the series, GHOST HAND, was a semi-finalist for The Kindle Book Review 2013 Best Indie Book Awards and a Cybil Award Nominee. The second book in the series, GHOST HOLD, was released in September 2013.

The third book in the series, GHOST HEART, will be released Summer 2014 and can currently be PRE-ORDERED through the GHOST HEART KICKSTARTER PROJECT (MAY 2014 only, so don’t delay).

PART 3: THE CREATIVE PROCESS

Where do you get your story ideas? Most great story ideas come from stretching the reality we know into a reality we don’t. They come from asking the age old question, “What if?” For example, the main idea for the fictional birth defect in my PSS Chronicles Series came from the real medical phenomenon of phantom limbs. Amputees can often feel and sense the limbs they no longer have. They might feel grass between the toes of the foot they no longer have, or a cramp in a leg that has been removed. Even people born without limbs still experience phantom limb syndrome, as if their minds have an ethereal map of their body that goes beyond flesh. And so, when I began to think about that I asked myself, “What if those limbs still existed on some non-material plane? What would they look like, and act like, and what power would they hold? And how would society react to those that had them?”

Do you have a specific writing style? I think my writing style is growing and developing, and I hope it always will be. When I wrote short stories, I enjoyed playing with various styles. However, when I wrote GHOST HAND, the first novel in my series, my goal was to write a page-turner. I wanted a book that people just couldn’t put down between chapters and I’ve been told numerous times I achieved that. I also tend toward simple, to-the-point writing with lots of action and dialogue. I don’t go in for flowery descriptions or poetic narrative. And I actually try not to describe my characters physically too much because I want it to be more about who they are and what they do, rather than what color their hair or eyes are.

Are you a “plotter” or a “pantser” (do you plan/outline the story ahead of time or write “by the seat of your pants”) I am a complete pantser. Though I may have a vague idea of where I want the plot to start and end, it is what the characters and story do to surprise me, the writer, that keeps me writing. I write for the same reason I read, to find out what happens. I think if I outlined, I’d get bored. To me, being a pantser encapsulated the magic of writing, and I’ve learned to trust the dance between my subconscious and the wider universe of story we all tap into. This method hasn’t failed me yet. Everyone keeps telling me about the joys of outlining, but I don’t buy it. I know it works for many people, but not for me.

Do you use critique partners or beta readers? Why or why not? When I wrote short stories I always ran them through a critique group and it helped improve my writing immensely. Now that I write novels, I have a dedicated group of beta readers. Feedback is essential to the writing process, but a writer also has to know how to receive that feedback and process it without compromising the story just to please others. But yes, I think organized feedback is a must for any professional writer.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging to write? I find romance hard to write. Although my books aren’t romances and the emphasis is on the thrill and suspense, they do still contain romantic relationships. For me, it is a struggle to keep from going down the over-used, over-romanticized, cheesy road one sees in so many books. I like for the relationships in my novels to be realistic, not cheesy. But it can be a challenge to keep things real. Thankfully, I have two teenagers (my kids) who beta read all my books and help me keep things real.

GHOST HAND: Seventeen-yearPSS books-old Olivia Black has a rare birth defect known as Psyche Sans Soma, or PSS. Instead of a right hand made of flesh and blood, she was born with a hand made of ethereal energy.

How does Olivia handle being the girl with the ghost hand? Well, she’s a little bit morbid and a whole lot snarky.

Her mother thinks her obsession with death, black clothing, and the local cemetery is a bid for attention. But when Marcus, the new guy in Olivia’s calculus class, stares at her like she’s a freak, Olivia doesn’t like it. And when her hand goes rogue, doing things she never imagined possible, Olivia finds herself running for her life with Marcus from a group of men bent on taking the power of her hand for their own nefarious purposes.

GHOST HOLD: Olivia Black is back.

Only this time she’s not the one in need of rescue.

Samantha James, rich, popular, and an award-winning composer at age seventeen, is the next target on the CAMFers’ list. In order to convince Samantha to come with them, Olivia and Passion must pose as cousins, blend into the most affluent high school in Indianapolis, and infiltrate a mysterious cult known as The Hold.

Olivia doesn’t expect it to be easy, even with the PSS guys backing them up. But what she discovers over the course of the mission will call into question everything she ever believed about herself, her family, and especially about Marcus, the guy she is undoubtedly falling in love with.

BRoP interview: C.J. Pinard

Carolyn-Author-resizeWelcome to C.J. Pinard, this week’s Blog Ring of Power guest. C.J. is a west coast native who has lived on both coasts and now lives near the middle, in Colorado! Coming from a family of writers and editors, she feels writing is in her blood and hopes people will lose themselves for a little while in the fantasy and fun of her stories. She also loves sweet red wine, the SF 49ers, and unlike most authors, doesn’t have any cats. When she’s not writing, she can be found chasing around her kids or working at her day job, which she totally feels interferes with life, but it also sometimes gives her inspiration for her books, since reality usually is way more interesting than fiction.

PART 5 — WORDS OF WISDOM

Tell us about your route to success –did you use an agent? How did you land your agent and/or publisher? No. I don’t have an agent (I don’t need one). I am 100% self-published and plan to stay that way unless one of the Big 6 offers me a big book deal with a huge advance *snort*. Seriously though, I can do everything myself. Writing, publishing, formatting, etc.

What are the most important elements of good writing?  I think this is different for everyone, but as a general statement, I think good word building and story plots have to go hand in hand. I’ve read books with wonderful stories that gripped me, but the writing lacked variety. On the flip side, I’ve read books with beautiful perfect writing and prose, but they were kinda boring. It’s so hard to find that balance.

Do you have any advice for other writers? I get asked this a lot by potential writers. What I always say is, just open up a Word document and start typing. Get your story done. Then worry about the technical aspects later. It’s that first step that’s the hardest.

What do you feel is the key to your success? Not sure I consider myself that successful, but I think the only way to make any money doing this is to just keep writing. I know it sounds so simpleton but it’s truly the best advice someone once gave me. Series’ are where it’s at, too. But please don’t mistake this for me saying quantity over quality, though. You should take your time and make sure your book is ready for reading (formatting and editing issues are the most distracting).

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers? Thank you so much for downloading my books. I hope you love my stories and they help you escape for a little while. I love emails and messages, so don’t be shy!

What are your current / future project(s)? My next book is a new adult romance called Beneath Broken about a veteran turned cop in Tampa, FL. He falls for a very broken woman who wants nothing to do with him at all.

PART  2: THE WRITING PROCESS

What is your writing process? Do you follow a regular routine? Do you use pen and paper or computer? Work at home or at the library/Starbucks, etc.

MMY: I work on a computer. I’m joined at the hip with my computer, actually. I write much more quickly and efficiently with one. I do handwrite in a notebook when I’m doing poetry, but that’s the only time.

There’s no real routine for me. I write whenever I have a spare second. I sit on the couch in the living room so the kids can play or snack or whatever. It’s Grand Central Station in here, which makes it difficult to concentrate sometimes, but I can have an eye on my three kiddos. And I write, brush My Little Pony’s hair, write, get snacks, write, help with homework, write, answer questions about bugs and outer space, and then write some more.

How much time per day do you spend on your writing?

MMY: I spend literally every free moment. Right now I just released my debut novel, so I’m doing more promotion and that sort of thing. It’s a lot of fun and I’m enjoying it very much, but it’s cutting into my writing time. I try and spend about four hours a day doing writing-related things. It ends up being more than that, but it’s interspersed throughout the day.

What has been the most surprising reaction to something you’ve written?

MMY: I wrote a novella titled Apocalyptic Montessa and Nuclear Lulu: A Tale of Atomic Love. It’s about a man who kidnaps a woman with the intent to kill her, but along the way he realizes she’s special. It’s a story about love and revenge and people trying to do the best with what they have.

I received more emails about that story than anything I had ever written. People wrote that they identified with my killers and their broken, abusive backgrounds. There, but for the grace of god, go they. I received some of the most beautiful, powerful personal stories regarding that novella. It stunned me. It humbled me. It also made me realize that I need to be wary how I tread, because even though I’m writing fiction, I’m bringing up very real emotions in very real people. It was a potent experience.

What is the strongest criticism you’ve ever received as an author? The best compliment?

MMY: The strongest criticism was some wonderful advice from Mort Castle, whom I admire greatly. He said that I had beautiful writing and an ethereal voice, but I needed to tether it to reality. Ground it a bit more. I’ve been working on doing that in some of my more lyrical pieces, and I can see how that advice alone has strengthened my writing. The best compliment, I think, is when people complain that they stayed up all night to read my work, even though they had work in the morning. That makes me smile.

How do you deal with rejection and/or negative reviews?

MMY: Rejection is much easier for me to handle now that I’ve worked at Shock Totem Magazine and sat on the other end of the desk. I understand rejection from the editor’s standpoint. It isn’t anything personal. Something didn’t fit or didn’t click and it really isn’t a big deal. That’s helped me so much.

Negative reviews are a little harder because somebody took the time to read something and they still hate it. But every person is so very different, and their likes and dislikes vary. Also, perhaps somebody read something while in a bad mood. Perhaps the main character reminds them of somebody they can’t tolerate. I try not to let it affect me personally. One day I hope to reach the stage where I don’t read every review, but right now I’m excited to get feedback.

Is your book in print, ebook or both?

Kimberly Schneider: Appearances can be deceiving

KimberlySchneider-2Guest post by Kimberly Schneider

Appearances can be deceiving.

So deceiving, in fact, that most of our difficulties arise out of responding to what’s apparent on the surface, instead of what’s really happening. And that usually causes us to crash and burn.

My husband is licensed as an instrument-rated private pilot. He’s told me that one of the most difficult things to learn when a pilot is flying through thick clouds, where sight can’t help you tell up from down, is to disregard the sensations of your body. Humans weren’t really designed for flying through space at high speeds, especially when the ground isn’t visible. When you can’t see the ground, your body can’t accurately process the information it is receiving. Therefore, it may get really confused about where it is in space.

And so, when you’re thousands of feet from the earth and you’ve got your hands on the controls of a plane, you have to ignore your body’s signals, and the resultant freaking-out that your ego is doing about whether you’re going to die because you can’t tell earth from sky.  Instead you must trust the data coming to you from your instruments, even though they don’t correspond with what you are feeling.

Similarly, when things get bumpy and confusing in life, if you act based on what seems obvious, or what your ego thinks is going on, you aren’t likely to like what happens next. Rather than reacting reflexively, you’ve got to trust the guidance of your soul, your Essential Self, at those turbulent times. Because your soul always knows where you are, whether it’s apparent to your ego or not.

So if you are in one of those foggy moments, when nothing makes sense, and you’re not sure where you are going, and the ground beneath your feet has fallen away to such an extent that you don’t even know where it’s gone, or whether you’ll ever feel grounded again, you’ve got to trust your instruments. Don’t act out of panic. Instead, be still and know.

Wait for the inner guidance that comes from a place of peace.

Everything You Need Is Right Here. I promise.

Sending love and bright blessings your way, today and always,

Kimberly

BRoP interview: Michelle Pickett

Snapshot_20130721_17

Welcome to Michelle Pickette, this week’s Blog Ring of Power guest. Here’s what she has to say about herself:

I’m a wife, mother, author, reader, although not always in that order.  I write young adult urban fantasies, science/fiction, paranormal, and young adult and new adult contemporary romances. Reading was one of my earliest passions, writing soon followed. I began writing seriously during college where I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in accounting. Why I chose a career that frowns on creativity remains a mystery.

Red Bull or Monster Khaos are my coffee of choice. I’m addicted to Reese’s peanut butter cups and peanut butter M&Ms and eat way too many while I write (I’m currently trying to kick this habit). I have an abnormal obsession with hoodies and can’t write without one. I hate to cook, but love to watch cooking shows. I’m a hopeful romantic; I love a swoon-worthy ending that will give me butterflies for days. And books that keep me thinking of them long after I’ve finished the last page.

I was born and raised in Flint, Michigan, but now live in a sleepy suburb of Houston, Texas, with my extremely supportive, not to mention gorgeous husband, three school-aged kids, a 125-pound “lap dog,” and a very snooty cat.

PART 2: THE WRITING LIFE

What is your writing process? Do you follow a regular routine? Do you use pen and paper or computer? Work at home or at the library/Starbucks, etc. I’m what most authors call a “pantser,” meaning I don’t follow an outline. I just write what comes to me as it comes. Sometimes I write the middle of a story before I write the beginning. Or I write the ending scene first, which happened with my current work-in-progress.

I try to follow a regular routine, but creativity doesn’t always work the way we want it to. I wish it came with an on and off switch sometimes. Generally, I get up at 6 AM and get ready for the day. I take my kids to school at 7:45 AM and then I do some social media things, answer emails, ETC. until 9-9:30am. Then I start writing or editing, whichever I happen to have scheduled for that day.

I always use a computer unless I’m away from home and have an idea hit me. Then I scribble notes out on anything I can find, including my hand one time. I do all my work at home.

How do you balance writing with other aspects of your life? I love what I do so I try not to complain, but it is hard sometimes to balance life and work. First, it’s easy for my family to “forget” that I’m at work during the day because I’m at home rather than away somewhere in an office. Because of that, I get a lot of interruptions. And when a person is interrupted during a thought/scene, it is almost impossible to get that scene back. You can never quite remember it exactly how you had it before you were interrupted—at least that’s my experience.

Second, because I’m home I’m the person who’s responsible for all the errands. I take the kids to the doctor, I grocery shop, I take the dog to the groomer…you get the idea. It’s a time-suck out of my work day. And since I live in the sticks…way out there…most errands take a 45 minute to an hour drive.

So to balance things, I make sure that appointments and errands are done on one day of the week (if possible). And I remind everyone the night before when I know I’m going to have a particularly busy day the next day. I ask them to try to keep their interruptions to a minimum.  In other words, unless you’re bleeding, vomiting, or have lost an appendage, please leave mommy alone. LOL!  But in all honesty, my family does a lot to help me and they try to respect my work time as much as they can. I’m blessed with a very supportive family and that’s really how work and family is balanced—having a supportive family.

When do you write? I try to write during the day when my kids are at school and my husband is at work, but my creative juices don’t always cooperate with me. There have been times I’ve gotten up at 2 or 3 in the morning because I’ve had an idea and I needed to get it on paper right then. So, scheduling is difficult for a writer.

What has been the most surprising reaction to something you’ve written? A man at my church found out I was an author. He’s trying to write a middle-grade book and asked if I would help him. I said I’d try, but middle-grade wasn’t my age group. He started asking what I wrote and I showed him some of my work. He thumbed through the pages of the zombie attacks and his eyes bugged out. He said he would have never guessed I’d be a zombie writer. He thought I’d be a flowery, lovey-dovey, romance writer. I wasn’t sure if that was a compliment or not. I just smiled and told him zombies make the world go ‘round. To which he replied, “I guess you really can’t judge a book by its cover.”

What is the strongest criticism you’ve ever received as an author? The best compliment? The strongest criticism was that I was racist in my portrayal of a character, which was not only completely untrue, but unfounded.

The strongest compliment was (this is quoted verbatim from the reader): “I’ve been hard pressed to find a story that captivated me. Last week I came across your book while intensely searching for my next adventure. I opened the book and was totally sucked into the story. I couldn’t get enough! Eva is so strong, so brave and refuses to live as a victim. I love her and all of the   characters that you brought to life. I feel like I’ve been on an exciting adventurous vacation and I didn’t even have to leave my home. I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate the story, the escape and the adventure. I’ve Found many books that I love, but I’ve NEVER been moved enough to write to an author…until now.I can’t thank you enough for the gift that you’ve shared with me. I just wanted for you to know that your writing changed me, made me feel a little more badass, a little more “Eva”, if you will. I’m so excited for The Infected, and to dive head first into more of your books! You are officially one of my favorites, I’m so glad to have stumbled upon your amazing work. Thank you, a million times, thank you!!!”

How do you deal with rejection and/or negative reviews? I had a particularly negative review of PODs. It was almost a personal attack rather than a fair and constructive review of the book. I took that really hard. I have to say, It really, really bothered me for days. Finally I decided that reading negative reviews wasn’t something I was able to do. I don’t have thick enough skin to read them.

Now, that’s not to say that all negative reviews are bad—they aren’t if they are given in a fair and constructive way. In fact, they can actually be very helpful to authors. They help us hone our craft and focus on areas where our writing is weak and it builds our confidence when a reviewer mentions that our writing excels in one area even if it could use help in another.

Welcome to Alys B. Cohen, this week’s Blog Ring of Power guest! Alys started writing as a young child. From picture books to novellas to fan fiction on a then-state-of-the-art IBM, if it involved writing, Alys wanted to do it. Always an avid reader, early literature favorites include Nancy Drew stories and the poetry of Edgar Allen Poe.

At the age of 12, Alys began participating in poetry readings. At 17, she penned her first full-length book, an inspirational non-fiction on living life with a severe illness. No publication attempt has been made with it.

For several years, Alys wrote short stories and poetry, eventually becoming involved with a part of the San Francisco poetry slam scene.

In 2011, a new story began to take form in Alys’s head. By September 2012, the iron was too hot to not strike. So she went to the living room, fired up her laptop, and within 30 days, had finished her first fiction novel’s first draft. She had finished the second in the trilogy by the end of the year.

A native of California, Alys currently calls Vancouver, Washington, home.

PART 5: WORDS OF WISDOM

Tell us about your route to success – how/when did you decide to self-publish? Did you query an agent first? How did you handle the editing, proofreading, cover design, etc. I did have a plan, at first, to seek an agent and traditional publication. A couple agents told me to rewrite the ending to have Juliette return to her abuser and “reform him with her love” to mimic Fifty Shades. Oh hell no! I am not willing to change the ending. If the traditional market wants abusers to win, then good bye to that path.

What are the most important elements of good writing? To some extent, readers need to relate to your character. This may mean giving the good guys flaws and the bad guys positive traits.

What tools are must-haves for writers? Any writer worth their salt will have a firm grasp of grammar in the language they’re using to write their book. You also need to place quality of words over quantity of them.

Do you have any advice for other writers? If you’re planning on a sequel or a trilogy or any set length of books that is more than a stand-alone, at least write bare first-drafts of them all so that you can figure out of you’re writing yourself into a corner. Once your first book is out there, there is no going back. Pulling a deus ex machina to get out of a sticky spot looks lazy and can aggravate fans. So plan ahead and know your story start to end. Consider planting seeds in your first book that readers can pick up on upon rereading the series.

Ask yourself what a specific scene does for a book. If it’s just there because you like it, nix it and toss it on your website as bonus content. Make each scene count.

What do you feel is the key to your success? I realized early on that this wouldn’t be an overnight endeavor and that there’d be times I wanted to press a pillow against my face and scream. Acknowledging the challenges, and that there will be more that you discover as you go along, helps in overcoming them. Also read. Read, read, read. I picked apart the books I love and figured out what I love about the style. I studied books I despise so I could figure out what I can’t stand about the style. I learned from the writing of other authors.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers? Specific? I like to watch Vampire Diaries while eating chocolate, sipping tea, and with my phone in my hand to Tweet. Strange as it sounds, this makes me more eager to write.

What are your current / future project(s)? Right now I’m in the first round of editing SACRED HONOR and am seeking beta readers. Beta readers will receive a copy of Sacred Blood to catch them up.

I am also researching how to write dystopian literature and am deciding if I could write a short series of stories that tie together, or one longer story.

I am also working on a patent that is related to writing, but I cannot share any information on this.

Is there anything else you’d like to share? Much of the jewelry in this book is real. A lot of the pieces are vintage pieces that I bought for the sole purpose of owning the jewelry. This helps me feel connected to the characters. The formal white gown from a pivotal scene is being created in real life. I’ve got a male and female model lined up to create a few scenes for photographs, though my lovely male model was recently signed to a major motion picture. So this is a long-term project.

Is your book in print, ebook or both? Ebook now, print books are on order.
