The trials and travails of the modern author are more numerous than ever before. Just to survive, today’s author has had to adapt and evolve into quite a multi-faceted creature, and we all know that survival was certainly hard enough for authors in any age of publishing.

I often term it the “wearing of many hats,” and this applies to authors who are with small presses and those who are self-published. It is indeed quite a hat collection too! Hats for marketing, networking, public speaking, knowledge of graphic design, accounting, publicity, and so much more fill the collection of today’s author.

I would surmise that a great majority of authors are not predisposed to all of these kinds of things, and it takes both effort and a learning curve to acquire the additional skill sets to handle all of the things that an author must attend to in order to be successful in today’s publishing climate. With so much falling on authors’ shoulders, it is a ray of light in the storm when you encounter an organization like the Literary Underworld.

My own encounter with the Literary Underworld came from the convention circuit. It was at conventions where I had met and gotten to know the colorful, vivacious, and downright fearless author named Elizabeth Donald. From the moment I met her, I knew she was both savvy and perceptive regarding the world of writers on all levels.  Her readings were something to behold, and you usually came out of it with some nice goodies such as Zombie Survival Kits, but underlying all the flair, pizzazz, and show-womanship I could see a keen mind with a good sense of marketing and publicity.

Another thing I noticed quickly with Elizabeth was how supportive she was to other authors, one of those rarer types of individuals that really gets the “win-win” model. She was intensely focused on her own work and career, as any author should be, but that didn’t mean she could not advocate and promote other authors. In this regard, she stood out from many authors I had met. She understood the plight of the indie author, and she was one of those willing to help.

Therefore, it was of great interest to me when the genesis of the Literary Underworld took place, and Elizabeth had asked me to participate as one of the authors to be carried in their catalog. Of course, being a writer of epic fantasy, I had to admire her generous invitation as she was committing herself to lugging around my larger tomes on the road! Yet she did, grinning and bearing along my larger books, and along with her noble cohorts such as the lovely and witty Angelia Sparrow, she helped expose my novels to more readers at conventions I could not personally attend.

Out in the perilous landscape of the modern author’s world, there are many kinds of author consortiums, and not all of them have authors’ interests at heart.  Many want to make money off of authors desperate to promote their work, and sadly many are successful at this.

The Literary Underworld is not one of those types of groups. The Literary Underworld is one of the shining lights among author consortium-type organizations.  They operate on a consignment basis to carry an author’s titles in their online store and at conventions, and the percentage they ask of the author is more than reasonable.

In fact, I must be candid here and state that they could ask for a little higher percentage and still be far more than fair. As an author who has done consignments with many bookstores and book fairs, I can say without question that The Literary Underworld is more than generous when it comes to what they ask for in the arrangement with a consigning author.

Let’s be frank. Attending conventions costs money. Gas, food, wear and tear on the car, hotels, booth space, and all manner of costs build up, and these things are taken on by the Literary Underworld when they are on the road. Packaging, time (yes, time has value!), gas (unless you live next door to the shipping center), office supplies, marketing, taxes (yes, the government always has a hand in your pocket when you do these sorts of things) and more is involved when running an online store. Not to mention stocking boxes and boxes of books, which have to be stored and inventoried.

It is quite and undertaking and it is one that is quite admirable when you look at what The Literary Underworld does for authors, and what it asks for in return.  It is a real friend to the indie author, is operated with great integrity, and does a lot for raising perceptions of small press and self-published titles in an age where an ocean of content has emerged in the age of eBooks.

The big retailers online are doing just fine right now, but you can make a real difference with a purchase from the Literary Underworld. Now that you know a little more about them, I encourage you to take a visit and browse their catalog, and pick up a title or two. All of the authors they carry are vetted, so you’ll find excellent quality. You will also be helping both indie authors and a great organization with your support!

While we are at it, here’s a 15% off coupon code to help you save even more money with a purchase!  Thanks for reading! Just enter this code at checkout: LUBLOGTOUR

Spirit of FireSPIRIT OF FIRE: Deep Within Everyone, There is a Spirit of Fire…

A maelstrom of war engulfs lands resisting the designs of the Unifier to bring about a new order, of a kind that has never existed within Ave. Battered by a massive invasion force from Gallea, the tribal people of the Five Realms and their Midragardan allies are being driven eastward, toward the sea, while the Saxan lines are wearing down ever thinner on
the Plains of Athelney.

Time is running out quickly, as an ancient creature of legend soars through the skies with a brave young Saxan. They carry the desperate hopes of two realms sorely beset by a voracious enemy. Diabolic entities conduct a great hunt, as a malignant darkness deepens across all of Ave. Exiles from another world must gain refuge, or find themselves ensnared by the long reach of the Unifier. The very nature of creation itself stands in the balance.

It is a time when the honor and fortitude of many are put to the test, and terrible prices are paid for resisting great evils. It is also a time of awakening for many, old and young alike, some of whom may yet discover the spirit of fire that lies within.

The third installment in the Fires in Eden series, Spirit of Fire is richly imagined epic fantasy with a diverse ensemble of characters that offers a new world to explore for readers who enjoy large-scale tales along the likes of George R.R. Martin, Brandon Sanderson, Steven Erikson, and J.R.R. Tolkien.

Losing my mind, one piece at a time

Guest post by Angelia Sparrow
From the Literary Underworld Blog Tour

Good day. I’m Angelia Sparrow, author, trucker, mom, Underlord, chief cook and bottle washer and now publisher.

An Underlord is one of the members of the Literary Underworld (http://www.literaryunderworld.com ), an author consortium. Our fearless leader has a sense of humor.

Why, may you ask, did I choose to step into the dynamic world of small press publishing? With thousands of small presses out there, what can Inkstained Succubus (http://www.inkstainedsuccubus.com ) offer that others can’t?

My short answer is “It seemed like a good idea at the time. After all, four hours of sleep a night is all the law REQUIRES me to have, right? I mean, it’s not like I don’t already run a household, work a 60 hour week, and write for four publishers.”

The second is tougher. Inkstained Succubus started out as Succubus Productions, my fannish vidding name, which expanded to encompass my family when everyone started vidding. Then I decided to put some out-of-contract short stories out as a collection. And INTO DARK WATERS led to a second, HOWL AT THE MISTLETOE, and a third collection, ADVENTURESSES. (ADVENTURESSES is unique in that half the stories are original for the collection)

Now that NIKOLAI and NIKO-CHAN have reverted to me, I have a print edition of NIKOLAI out and am doing massive content edits to NIKO-CHAN.  Then a friend sent me his manuscript. I read it, liked it and offered him a contract.

Now, I have a near stranger who has sent me hers, and I’m about to offer her a contract. We have a cookbook, a game source book and an audio book under contract as well for release next year.

The old joke goes “The best way to make a small fortune in publishing is to start with a large one.” I’m doing my best to keep front-end costs low. The authors, voice-actors and editors get paid back-end money, aka royalties. Only the artists get paid up front.

My focus for the press is building a diverse base of books, fiction, non-fiction across many genres. My five year goal is to quit touring under my own name and tour on the press’ dime, under its name, and pay a minion. We’ll read almost anything, but we are picky about what we contract.

Eight years of experience in the e-book and small press has given me a feel for the workflow of a manuscript and how to market. By putting books out as both e-book and print-on-demand paperback, we capture both market segments.

And our paperbacks can be found at the Literary Underworld. Without this group, I would still be hiding in my room, typing and doing one local convention a year. Elizabeth encouraged me to go to more, to get my name and face out a bit.

Worked too well. This year, I overlapped with the Underworld at one convention. I’ll do six before the end of the year. Then again, I am prolific and tend to take up more than my fair share of the book racks.  If all of us wrote 10 novels in 8 years, Elizabeth would need a much bigger car.

But as it stands, I have three new novels coming out before the next time I’ll see the Underworld. HARD REBOOT comes out Sept 30. It’s a tale of one man’s love and determination to have his wife back from the powerful men who have taken her mind away from her. SPELLBOUND DESIRE will be out October 26, a hard-drinking PI in an urban fantasy Memphis falls for a combat mage on one last mission. And BARBAROSSA’S BITCH comes out in January, a post-apocalyptic tale of biker gangs rebuilding the world.

These will all be available through my website: http://www.brooksandsparrow.com and through the Literary Underworld  http://www.literaryunderworld.com

As a special bonus to the readers, the Underworld is offering a 15% coupon code LUBLOGTOUR good until Oct 15.

When Sean O’Neill’s wife vanished, he discovered what limits he would go to in order to have her back. Now, faced with a brainwashed sex slave, instead of his wife, he must give Caitlin the reboot she needs to make her a star net-runner once again.
spellboundesireSPELLBOUND DESIRE (available Oct 26)
Hard drinking PI D.J. Admire takes the case of combat mage Bran McKay when he blows into Memphis to destroy the demon Oeliette. But DJ finds her solitary life not quite so lonely anymore, and she doesn’t want to lose the man to the demon.

BRoP interview: Cat Torres

Caterina

Welcome to Caterina Torres, this week’s guest for the Blog Ring of Power interview! Tell us about yourself…

I am in my mid-twenties and I graduated with a BA in Anthropology and a minor in Humanities. The name I go by is Cat, and I love to write about the apocalypse, but not in the biblical sense of the word. Any sort of dystopian, end of the world stories seriously interest me. I guess it has a lot to do with being part of the rat race of life, trying to climb the great ladder of success.

Don’t miss the rest of her BRoP interview:

Part 1 – Wednesday, Sept. 26 @ Terri

Part 3- Friday, Sept. 28 @ Em

Part 4 – Monday, Oct. 1 @ Sandra

Part 5 – Tuesday, Oct. 2 @ Dean

PART 2: THE WRITING LIFE

BRoP: What is your writing process? Do you follow a regular routine? Do you use pen and paper or computer? Work at home or at the library/Starbucks, etc.

Cat: I write on the computer either at the dinner table or in front of my TV. I don’t like to write anywhere else.

BRoP: How do you balance writing with other aspects of your life?

Cat: I don’t (just kidding). I have a schedule – write 1,000 words a day and that’s it.

BRoP: When do you write?

Cat: Weekdays in the evening.

BRoP: How much time per day do you spend on your writing?

Cat: About an hour.

BRoP: What has been the most surprising reaction to something you’ve written?

Cat: When someone couldn’t stop laughing at my puns, even though I didn’t mean to make a part of that story funny. Also, that someone loved my book. I know how that sounds, but as a brand new author, I was bracing myself for the worst.

BRoP: What is the strongest criticism you’ve ever received as an author? The best compliment?

Cat: Strongest criticism – “your writing sounds juvenile.” Best Compliment – “I couldn’t put it down.”

BRoP: Other than your family, what has been your greatest source of support?

Cat: My CP’s and AQC. Anytime I feel down, I go to them and they make me feel better.

BRoP: How do you deal with rejection and/or negative reviews?

Cat: I go to my friends for support and I try to learn from what was said in the review so I don’t repeat the same mistakes later.

BRoP: What format is your book(s) available in (print, e-book, audio book, etc.)?

Cat: e-book and print.

Marketing update: book giveaways

goodreadsI’m blogging on The Writers’ Lens about book giveaways.
