DAY 5: Bonnie Milani
Now…what have I been up to since my BRoP interview? Well, being a benefits broker in my day-life, ObamaCare pretty much answers that one. There’s a tremendous amount of research and explanation involved in switching every individual insurance policy written in the past three years over to an ObamaCare-compliant plan. So that pretty much accounts for my days. And evenings. And more than a few nights… On the bright side, though, I’ve been able to use my writing skills to help out others by providing a summary write-up of the law’s key terms and applications for various writers’ groups and others. I’ve gotten truly heart-warming feedback from it so I know I’ve at least helped ease some of the confusion for my fellow writers.
Book-wise: ‘Home World‘ is plugging along. In addition to distribution in the US, Canada, and the U.K., my publisher has orders from Australia, New Zealand and even India. Closer to home, I’ve been able to place signed copies at Mystery & Imagination Bookshop (aka Bookfellows on Amazon). That’s one of the last magical SFF/mystery niche bookstores where you stop in for a browse and leave with a family of kindred spirits. It’s a place where you can bump into The Names: (think Niven & Pournelle, Harlan Ellison, Tim Powers, James Blaylock, George Clayton Johnson, Dennis Etchison, Peter Atkins, and Guillermo del Toro) so I’m horrendously excited to have ‘Home World‘ on their shelves.
Writing-wise: I’ve just posted ‘Trades‘ on Smashwords. It’s a short (well…short for me) sci fi noir story full of hard-boiled men and dangerous women hiding dark secrets – with a solid dose of wry humor and just a bit of romance thrown in.
ABOUT BONNIE MILANI — Bonnie has taken what might be called the sandwich approach to writing. She started writing early, winning state-wide writing contests in grammar school, publishing an environmental fairy tale under the aegis of the NJ Board of Education in college. After earning her M.A. in Communication at Stanford, Bonnie freelanced feature articles for East Coast newspapers and regional magazines, from Mankind and Peninsula to Science Digest as well as how to articles for the late & much lamented fanzine Speculations. She stopped writing completely after marriage while building a pair of businesses with her husband. It was only with the successive deaths of each member of her family that she reclaimed her love of story-telling. Home World is the result.
Today, Bonnie lives with her husband of thirty-six years in Los Angeles. She is still a full-time benefits broker, specializing in employee benefits for entrepreneurs and micro-businesses. You can find Bonnie on Facebook.
And be sure to check out her September 2013 interview with the Blog Ring of Power:
