Intro to Shamanism: Oct. 5

In June, I had the opportunity to take Jennifer’s “Walking the Weave” workshop. I can’t say enough about how meaningful it was to me. Neither my journey partner nor I could clearly determine my animal ally, but Jennifer helped me understand why. With her assistance, I released blocks I’ve encountered since I began my “inner work” in earnest about seven years ago. — Teresa

Following is information provided by Jennifer L. Jacoby:

Walking the Weave: An Introduction to Shamanism

The tapestry of your soul spirals through eternity. Come rediscover your silver chord and the threads that lead to your inner weave.

Shamanism is a mystical, earth-centered tradition that honors the spiraling rhythms of nature, the soul and direct experience of the Divine. Recognizing the interplay of worlds both seen and unseen, our shamanic ancestors walked the Otherworld, in search of wisdom, guidance and healing.

They walked the weave of the tapestries of soul.

Today that wisdom still calls to us, inviting us to remember.

Walking the Weave is a one-day, experiential introduction to shamanism.Together we will explore core and Celtic shamanic concepts, discuss cosmology and learn to move in and out of the Otherworld. Practicing basic shamanic journey techniques, we will connect with animal allies and teachers in the non-physical world.

Designed for those new to shamanism, Walking the Weave requires no previous journey experience or training. Attendance for the full day and some work in pairs is required.

BRoP interview: C.P. Bialois

PART 5: WORDS OF WISDOM

me at starbucks

Tell us about your route to success – how/when did you decide to self-publish? Did you query an agent first? How did you handle the editing, proofreading, cover design, etc.? I did a lot of research for months before I was ready to have it published. In the end, I felt it was better for me to self-publish and keep full control over my product. Now, that doesn’t mean I don’t want a publisher. I’m looking at several right now, but I want to make certain it’s the right fit for me. I don’t feel I should go through one just because someone says I should.

When it comes to editing and proofreading there are a core group I rely on for that. They know I want them to be honest and they haven’t disappointed me yet. For covers, I again have a group I throw the question out t

o if they’re interested. I prefer covers with an organic feel to them and they’ve been great thus far.

What are the most important elements of good writing? For me, there are two things. First, it’s being open to new ideas and taking what you like or can use. We’re surrounded by tons of information on how to write, how to be a better writer, and so on. The trick is to not become overwh

elmed with it all and follow your heart. Secondly, and the most important to me, is read. Read, read, read, read, read. It may not seem like it, but you can learn more from reading a book by your favorite author than you can in any classroom. Everything from sentence structure, to plot development and character building to scene description are all there for the taking. It’s a cool thing when you pick up on how to tell a story through little more than exposure and osmosis.

What tools are must-haves for writers? I think a working vocabulary, the ability to tell a story, and the willingness to learn and grow are among the most important. No one is perfect, but the more you work at it, accept critiques, and read the faster you’ll learn. I think of it like learning the alphabet. We all have to start somewhere before we can master something.

Do you have any advice for other writers? Don’t ever quit and keep mining for gold. As I mentioned earlier, there’s tons of information out there for us. Our task is to sift through to find what we can use and leave what we can’t.

What do you feel is the key to your success? I think it’s my willingness to share my stories. They’re not perfect, but they were ones I wanted to write and I’m glad others are enjoying them as much as I am.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers? Yes, buy my books. Just kidding… or am I? Seriously, I want to thank all of you for your support. I love to hear from you whether it’s good or bad and hopefully I’ll be able to keep you entertained in the coming years.

What are your current / future project(s)? This is going to be a bucket list lol. I’m currently working on the third Sword and the Flame novel called The Lightwalker. It picks up four years after the Purging with the original characters and a few new ones. At the moment I’m up to chapter 16 and I have a feeling it’s going to be a big one. I hope I didn’t just jinx myself lol. I’m also working on a series of horror novellas collectively called Gruesome Tales as well as getting ready to begin hammering on the second novella about Eron’s adventures as well as formulating some ideas for a potential sequel to Call of Poseidon.

Is there anything else you’d like to share? I’d like to say thank you for spending time with me during this interview and giving me the opportunity to share my thoughts and feelings about what I do.

BRoP interview: D.C. Farmer

BRoPlogo-1Welcome to this week’s Blog Ring of Power guest, newly minted contemporary fantasy author D.C. Farmer. D.C.’s debut novel, The 400lb Gorilla, will be released by Spence City next year and you, dear BRoP readers, are among the first people to hear about this book and see the cover. Enjoy!

Be sure to check out the other BRoP sites for the rest of the interview:

PART 5: WORDS OF WISDOM

dcfTell us about your route to success –how did you land your agent/publisher? Spence City is publishing the book.  It’s a boutique publisher–full of like minds, which is all you really want. They wanted Urban Fantasy and I happened to have one in my drawer. I’d written it for me and they liked it. Agents? Mwahahaha.

What are the most important elements of good writing? Engaging the reader and working towards that catharsis that all good books make you have.  Understand the difference between story and plot. Understand the need to apply craft through a zillion read throughs and edits.

What tools are must-haves for writers?  Sense of humour. A way of enjoying the long and arduous process and not just the product. Read Stuff. Know what an MRU is

What do you feel is the key to your success? Success? Writing for yourself. Writing from the heart the books you’d liek to read yourself. I think that if you try and be commercial, you’re doomed–mwahahaha (okay I’ll stop now).

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers? Keep buying books.

What are your current / future project(s)?  MG science fantasy series for Spencer Hill. The second hipposync Archive book which I think will be called Frivolius Pur

REMEDY: Matt Danmore thinks he’s lucky. Not many people survive a near death accident with nothing more than a bout of amnesia, a touch of clumsiness and the conviction that the technician that did the MRI had grey skin and hooves.

Still,  it takes time to recover from trauma like that, especially when the girl that was in the accident with you disappears into thin air. Especially when the shrinks keep telling you she’s just a figment of your imagination.

So when she turns up a year later looking ravishing, and wanting to carry on where they left off, Matt’s troubled life starts looking up.  But he hasn’t bargained for the baggage that comes with Silvy, like the fact she isn’t really an English language student, or even a girl.

Underneath her traffic stopping exterior is something else altogether, something that involves raving fanatics bent on human sacrifice, dimensionally challenged baked bean tins, a vulture with a penchant for profanity, and a security agent  for the Dept of Fimmigration (that’s Fae immigration for those of you not in the know) called Kylah with the most amazing gold-flecked eyes…

Giveaways 6/22 to 6/24 in honor of HNS

Mother_coverJaguar HopeEverything happens at once.

Three events I’ve been anticipating are all happening this week. Two are in Las Vegas–manifestation training offered by Dr. Joe Gallenberger, and the Applied Precognition Project conference. The third is in St. Petersburg, Fla.–the Historical Novel Society conference.

It was a hard decision, but with so many online friends to meet, I couldn’t pass on Vegas!

In honor of the HNS conference, I’m offering the two prequels to ZERO TIME–my historical fantasy novel–for free on Kindle this weekend, ending Monday (June 22-24). I’m just sad I can’t be in two places at one time (did I mention I’m a Steve Berry fan!).

JAGUAR HOPE, a novelette, tells of the ill-fated journey to Earth’s Age of Crystal. Two black jaguars become the symbol of hope for a race facing extinction when they accompany a dying traveler back to her home planet.

Four-year-old White Heron begins her journey as a master shaman when she arrives in Teotihuacan with her sister Quilla and Mama Couen. Her fledgling skills prove the only defense against a priest of the Lord of Darkness in THE MOTHER SERPENT’S DAUGHTER, a short story.

BRoP interview: Heidi C. Vlach

HeidiLRColcrop-1Welcome to Heidi C. Vlach, this week’s Blog Ring of Power guest. Heidi is a Canadian chef graduate who didn’t care much for the high-stress kitchen life. Her knowledge of food and culture is now used for home cooking, being an overqualified waitress and fantasy world-building. Heidi currently shares an apartment with her (male) best friend, two cats and far too many video games.

PART 2: THE WRITING LIFE

What is your writing process? Do you follow a regular routine? Do you use pen and paper or computer? Work at home or at the library/Starbucks, etc. I don’t have a particular routine, I just look for blocks of time and seize them. That school of thought where an author should wake up at 5 AM on the dot every day to write? Ugh, I just don’t do that. Not the least of which because I’m a nocturnal creature and sometimes I’m just going to bed until 5 AM!

I vary my writing location between my kitchen table, the library, and coffee shops/restaurants. Most of my writing and structural work happens on my Macbook Air, in the program Scrivener, but I’m not super-organized. There are dozens of random .txt files with worldbuilding notes. My apartment is littered with pencil drawings and scribbled notes-to-self.

How do you balance writing with other aspects of your life? I’m happily single, so my time is mostly my own. My day job is waitressing, so that has the benefit of relatively short working hours — plus, my work forces me to interact with lots of acquaintances and strangers. I’m an introvert and I find social activity tiring sometimes, but an author can’t write people unless they’re familiar with people.

How much time per day do you spend on your writing? It varies. Some days I feel into it — really connected with the story I’m currently telling — and I’ll write for 3 or 4 hours. Sometimes I take a few days off to refuel my brain with other stuff.

What has been the most surprising reaction to something you’ve written? I think I was most surprised by the book reviewer who said that Remedy made her cry. I mean, I cry over fiction all the time and I find it a reasonable reaction. But I was still shocked and flattered that I managed to evoke that kind of emotion in someone else!

What is the strongest criticism you’ve ever received as an author? The best compliment?

remedycover1400pxdone-1The strongest criticism I’ve ever received is probably that “nothing happens” in my writing. That comes up fairly often with Remedy, since Remedy is about personal journeys made during a plague outbreak. Because I didn’t use the old “hero finds a cure” model you usually see in fantasy plague stories, the disease outbreak does its damage and then peters out, and life moves on. So if you don’t consider the characters’ emotional growth to be “anything happening”, then, well, no. Nothing much happens. But I think that’s such an unfortunate way to interpret a story. It’s like someone looking at works of art in a museum and saying, “It’s just paint splattered on a canvas, what’s the big deal?”

The best compliment I’ve ever received was from a fellow local writer who had just read my first 2 books, Remedy and Ravel. Someone asked her who her favourite Aligare character was, and she paused, thought about it, and decided, “All of them.” That really made me happy. I strive to create likeable characters, people you’d actually want to meet and have a beer with.

Other than your family, what has been your greatest source of support? I’ve found random strangers in my daily life to be surprisingly encouraging. Maybe it’s partly because I’m young and I’m quick to describe my novel writing as a self-started career (I get a lot of, “Wow, multiple books at your age!”). But still, most people seem delighted to find out that they’re talking to an author of fantasy books. It always lifts my spirits when some person I don’t even know gives me a smile and wishes me success.

How do you deal with rejection and/or negative reviews? I try to rationalize why the person didn’t like it. No one likes everything, so if I figure out why my piece didn’t match the person’s tastes, it doesn’t seem like so much of a personal jab. If a reader prefers action and my book was never meant to be action-packed? Well, no hard feelings. It’s more difficult to deal with when a negative review attacks the author instead of the piece of writing, or when the review is really ignorant (e.g. insisting that no self-respecting adult reads stories about “talking animals”). But everyone has an opinion and I do my best to respect that.

What format is your book(s) available in (print, e-book, audio book, etc.)? My books are available in ebook and print-on-demand paperback. All the buying options are listed on the Books section of my blog: http://heidicvlach.wordpress.com/books/

BRoP Interview: Aaron Dennis

Welcome to this week’s Blog Ring of Power guest, Aaron Dennis, creator of the Lokians science fiction series. He’d like to introduce himself:

PART 2: THE WRITING LIFE

When do you write? Whenever the mood strikes me, I write. Generally I am at home, but it happens at any given moment.

How much time per day do you spend on your writing? Anywhere from 2-5 hours a day, and probably 5 or 6 days a week.

How do you deal with rejection and/or negative reviews? I don’t deal with them. They are what they are, and I have no intentions of trying to please everyone. Naturally, if a very good point is brought to my attention, I make sure to address it in future writing. Once, I was told I did not portray a specific modality in its true form. I made the one minor correction in the following novel, and that’s the only time I’ve ever changed anything.

What format is your book(s) available in (print, e-book, audio book, etc.)? I think Epub and PDF, but I convert it to Mobi and whatever else

BRoP Interview: Sarah-Jane Lehoux

Welcome to this week’s Blog Ring of Power guest, Sarah-Jane Lehoux, author of the SEVY SERIES. Don’t miss the rest of her interview at:

  • Part 1 @ Sandra – May 20BRoPlogo-1
  • Part 2 @ Dean – May 21
  • Part 3 @ Terri – May 22
  • Part 5 @ E.M. – May 24

PART 4: ABOUT YOUR CURRENT WORK

Sarah-Jane Lehoux-1Tell us about your new book and when it is out? Where can people purchase it? The Sevy Series is a fantasy series consisting of (to date) three books: Thief, Shades of War, and Masquerade. The series was originally contracted and published by a traditional publisher, but due to some behind the scenes things I won’t get in to here, I decided to have my contracts revoked and the rights of the novels returned to me.

I’ve re-edited and re-formatted all three books, and they will be available for sale in both print and ebook on May 20. Interested readers can visit http://sarah-janelehoux.com/sevyseries.htm for more information on the series, as well as purchase links.

Is there anything new, unusual, or interesting about your book? How is it different from other books on the same subject? e-Publishing a Book has called the series “gritty” and “realistic” and that I subvert the stereotypes of fantasy. That’s up to the individual to determine for themselves, but I do think that I have created a universe and characters that are pretty different from other current fantasy reads out there.

What I am more proud of is that fact that I’ve made my villains as sympathetic as the heroes. I believe in making characters as three-dimensional as possible. Every character has their flaws and their virtues, and that makes it hard to figure out where the plot is going to go next.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why? My favourite chapter is in the third novel, Masquerade. It is when the villain confronts someone from his past. It is told from the point of view from someone suffering the last stages of syphilis (which causes neurological problems). So it’s very disjointed and disturbing, which I find so completely compelling. It actually gives me the chills to read it over, even though (as I said previously) I don’t usually have strong emotional reactions while reading or writing my stories.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp? There are a few different messages I want readers to take away with them. The first is about moral relativism—what’s right and what’s wrong depends on a great deal on the situation. Another message has to do with the dangers of stereotyping people/races/cultures and how first impressions can be dangerous and deceitful.

Tell us about your book’s cover – where did the design come from and what was the design process like? I’m a freelance cover artist, so for the re-launch of the series, I designed the covers myself. I wanted covers that were classy, yet magical. Many of the covers that I’m commissioned to make for other authors feature a pretty girl against a gothic background; that seems to be what’s popular these days. I wanted something just as eye-catching as those covers, but different enough to stand out in a crowd.

Is your book in print, ebook or both? The Sevy Series (Thief, Shades of War and Masquerade) will be available in both print and ebook starting May 20.
