BRoP Interview: Alisha Basso

BRoP Logo Revised-1Welcome to Alisha Basso, this week’s Blog Ring of Power guest! Alisha lives in Nevada with her wonderful family and two sweet dogs. When not writing, Alisha is running around with lots of children or tending her garden. Please feel free to send her a note on facebook or drop her a line from her website alishabasso.com.

You can find the rest of Alisha’s interview at:

me2PART ONE: ABOUT YOU

When and why did you begin writing? I’ve always told stories. When I was nine or so, I would tell stories to my friends at sleep overs. I remember once, one of my friends said, “Wouldn’t it be cool if you grew up to be an author?” I loved that idea so much, but of course I never thought it would come to pass. I just jotted my stories down and then left them to sit unread. It wasn’t until I had written This Blood, the first novel in my Grace Allen Series, that I discovered e-books and publishing. That was only about three years ago. I know… I was way behind!

What books have most influenced your life? I absolutely adore Ann Rice. She was the first writer to really grip me. It was like being held in a vice I was so obsessed with The Vampire Chronicles. Then came other novels such as Salem’s Lot by Stephen King which let me know that when writing a vampire or any character can be whatever we decide we want them to be. I love anything written by Jane Austen. I particularly loved Mansfield Park, so much so that it took a third reading to realize that Fanny was in love with her first cousin. Talk about being blind in my devotion.   I read a lot of Nora Roberts and the wonderful Charlaine Harris and Kim Harrison. I also devour Karen Marie Moning. I could read her novels every day over and over.

When did you first consider yourself a professional writer? I don’t know that I feel like a pro quite yet. I do feel a little thrill when someone leaves me a kind review. The thought that I can write a story that others will read and enjoy makes me feel not only giddy but extremely lucky.

What is your favorite theme/genre to write about? I absolutely love Paranormal Romance/Fantasy but I really want to try my hand a time travel novels. Maybe one day….maybe not.

If you couldn’t be an author, what would your ideal career be? I have had many jobs in my life. I was a flight Operations Officer for Reno Air (a tiny airline in my hometown that eventually closed.) And an Administrative Assistant for three very needy bosses and I can safely say that I would never want to do either of those ever again. These days I sometimes watch children and I love it. I feel my family is that much larger with each little person that enters my life. If writing couldn’t be a part of my life I would want to open a center to care for kids.

PART 2: THE WRITING LIFE

What is your writing process? Do you follow a regular routine? Do you use pen and paper or computer? Work at home or at the library/Starbucks, etc. I tend to only use my computer for the actual story. Every time I outline with pen and paper I end up with something completely different when I sit down to the computer. I always work at home with my headphones on and lots of different music blaring.

How do you balance writing with other aspects of your life? Balance? Oh you’re serious… Okay. Well, I guess I just decide on how much sleep a person really needs. My kids come first and they are some busy little people but when I do get to spend time on the computer I try to write until my vision blurs.

When do you write? I am a late-night writer more and more. I seem to have the best ideas when everyone has already gone to bed. My house is dark and quiet and my imagination thrives.

What has been the most surprising reaction to something you’ve written? My mom once said, “Wow, you’re a real writer.” This was a few months after my third novel was on sale. She read it and I guess it finally dawned on her that yeah, her daughter wrote that. Love you mama.

Other than your family, what has been your greatest source of support? Hands down my biggest supporter has been Neeley Bratcher. She read my novel, This Blood and it lead her to look me up. We spoke for a bit and she invited me to read her novel, Child’s Proof and once I did I discovered that this woman was hilarious and quite the writer. We quickly became best friends (She lives almost two thousand miles away and we have never met face to face). I would not have gotten as far as I have without her.

Is your book in print, ebook or both? Both ebook and print

Radiation dips during solar storm

Reprinted from Space Weather News http://spaceweather.com

On Sept. 12, student scientists in California launched a weather balloon to the stratosphere during the most intense solar storm of the year. They expected to measure an increase in energetic radiation.  Instead they measured a sharp drop.  Their counterintuitive data and the interesting explanation for it are featured on today’s edition of http://spaceweather.com

Strong solar flare affecting communications

Reprinted from Space Weather News for Sept. 10, 201,  http://spaceweather.com

X-FLARE:  Active sunspot AR2158 erupted on Sept. 10th, producing a strong X1.6-class solar flare.  Because the sunspot is directly facing Earth, this is a geoeffective event. HF radio blackouts and other communications disturbances have already been observed on the day-lit side of Earth. Stay tuned to http://spaceweather.com for more information and updates about the possibility of an Earth-directed CME and geomagnetic storms in the days ahead.

DON’T MISS THE STORM: Aurora alerts are available from http://spaceweathertext.com (text) and http://spaceweatherphone.com (voice).

Get your pre-sale copy today! The Labyrinth of Time

labyrinth_ebookI’m happy to announce The Labyrinth of Time, my young adult contemporary fantasy set in Peru, is coming Nov. 7 from Silent Partner Publishing and the ebook is NOW available for presale at:

If you’d like a review copy, please contact me at twfendley@gmail.com. I’d love to hear from you!

Can Jade restore the Firestone’s powers before the First Men return to judge humanity?

Spending spring break in Peru with her grandmother isn’t sixteen-year-old Jade’s idea of fun. She’d much rather be with her friends at Lake of the Ozarks. Then she meets Felix, a museum director’s son. Jade discovers only she and Felix can telepathically access messages left on engraved stones in the age of dinosaurs.

Following the ancient stones’ guidance, they enter the Labyrinth of Time and–with a shapeshifting dog’s help–seek a red crystal called the Firestone. But time is running out before the First Men return on the night of the second blue moon.

***

Prophecy from the Peruvian Elders

Beware the second blue moon’s rising. Stones will speak to men, and the song of Pachamama and Inti will fill your hearts. Tremble at the dark moon, which heralds the Light’s return. Only those who tread the Path of Knowledge may rise among the First Men and quench the flames of doom.

***

My thanks to author/illustrator Jennifer Stolzer for her cover illustration, which gives readers their first glimpse into the Labyrinth!

Near-Earth asteroid flyby Sept. 7

Reprinted from Space Weather News for Sept. 4, 2014 http://spaceweather.com

ASTEROID FLYBY:  On Sunday, Sept. 7, a house-sized asteroid  named “2014 RC” will fly through the Earth-Moon system approximately 40,000 km from our planet. At closest approach,  the space rock will be almost inside the orbit of Earth’s geosynchronous satellites.  Amateur astronomers, especially those in the southern hemisphere, may be able to observe the flyby. Check http://spaceweather.com for more information.

AURORA WATCH: On Sept. 6th, a day before the asteroid flyby, a  CME is expected to deliver a glancing blow to Earth’s magnetic field, setting the stage for a nice display of high-latitude auroras.  Geomagnetic storm alerts are available from http://spaceweathertext.com (text) and http://spaceweatherphone.com (voice).
