BRoP Interview: C.N. Lesley

CN LesleyElizabeth Hull, writing under the by line of C.N.Lesley, lives in Alberta with her husband and cats. Her three daughters live close by. When she isn’t writing, Elizabeth likes to read and to paint watercolors. She is also a keen gardener (despite the very short summers) and now has a mature shade garden. Once a worker in the communications sector, mostly concentrating on local news and events, she now writes full time, and fusses over her cats. She was senior managing editor of FlashMe Magazine and now is assistant flash fiction editor for Abyss and Apex.

PART 4: ABOUT YOUR CURRENT WORK

Sword of ShadowsTell us about your new book and when it is out? Where can people purchase it? Sword of Shadows is on its way to the printers right now. It will be live in a week to ten days give or take. It will be available on the Amazons, Kobo, Barns and Noble, iTunes, and Smashwords in both e-format and as a paperback. This is book two in the Shadow series and follows on from Shadow Over Avalon.

Is there anything new, unusual, or interesting about your book? How is it different from other books on the same subject? As a series, these books are about taking a legend of King Arthur promising to return to save his people in the time of their greatest need, which happens in the far future. How he is returned and what he faces haven’t been done before. I know nobody else has stuck scales and gills on King Arthur and gotten away with it.

What was the hardest part of writing this book? The angst. It was upsetting to have to write certain scenes that were necessary to the plot. Here is where my beta readers came into play as I was sent death threats if I didn’t alter a certain thing, which, on due reflection, and with regard to the reaction, I did.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why? It has to be where the antagonists have point of view time. They are beyond nasty, but at the same time they have wants, wishes and needs, just the same as the rest of us. It was necessary to humanize them and in doing so, they became such fun.

Did you learn anything from writing this book and what was it? Never, ever try to outline again.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in this book? Having just gone through the editing process, then nothing. I got my chance to tweak whatever right then and there.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp? Consequences. There is always a reaction to an action.

Tell us about your book’s cover – where did the design come from and what was the design process like? Oh drool. My cover for Sword of Shadows has a pterodactyl hovering over Stonehenge on the front and a kneeling Arthur with the sword suspended in the air on the back. The design reflects the story and was implemented by the talented Evelinn Enokson, who painted the cover for the first book, Shadow Over Avalon. Wonderful graphics were by the talented Ken Dawson. The design process was a dream. I put forward some ideas and we tossed them around for a very short while; soon coming up with something everyone loved.

Shadow over AvalonPART 5: WORDS OF WISDOM

Tell us about your route to success –how did you land your agent/publisher? I could paper the walls of my office with rejection slips if I printed them out. It doesn’t matter who didn’t like whatever I sent, it matters who did. One yes is all it takes. Kristall Ink have been awesome to work with.

What are the most important elements of good writing? Keeping the writing fresh. The author has to be excited by the story. If they are bored, then this will come over and I have seen it many times in books that are series, which probably should have ended way before they did.

What tools are must-haves for writers? A dictionary and thesaurus, along with a Chicago manual of style. Also a slew of non-fiction books related to the genre chosen. It is sort of necessary to know simple things like a daffodil will not be in flower in a garden at the same time as a rose, for example. A setting must be credible. Also cook books wouldn’t go amiss as there seems to be a huge temptation to have characters on a road trip stop for the night, throw a few veg and a lump of meat in a giant cauldron and voila, there is an instant stew. Note, stews take hours and exactly how does one transport a giant cauldron when on horseback?

Do you have any advice for other writers? Read a lot, both in genre and out of it.

What do you feel is the key to your success? Gotta be great covers and editing. I also spend time each day marketing.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers? My pen name is C.N.Lesley. I have one not because I want to hide behind it, but because I cannot use my legal name of Elizabeth Hull for my work. There is a dear, sweet lady using that name who is already published under the fantasy genre. Thank you for reading my books. I love you all.

What are your current / future project(s)? Oh lordy. The third book in the Shadow series and the second book in the Darkspire series for sure and just getting the finishing touches. I have a sci fi I would like to finish, also, and then there is a paranormal romance and an urban fantasy. Currently on the back burner is another science fantasy set off world and nothing to do with the Shadow series.

Is your book in print, ebook or both? Both.

Is there anything else you’d like to share? I have a ghost short story that will be free over Halloween on the Amazons, entitled Forever and a Day.

Rendezvous with a comet: Fact & fantasy

On Nov. 11, the European Space Agency’s Rosetta satellite is set to make a historic first landing on a comet, a feat that has sparked writers’ imaginations for centuries.

labyrinth_ebook“The idea of traveling on a comet is not new, but the reality is,” said T.W. Fendley, author of The Labyrinth of Time. “In 1877, science fiction pioneer and visionary Jules Verne published Off on a Comet about forty people stranded on a comet for two years.”

In Fendley’s young adult contemporary fantasy novel, alien visitors from the Pleiades return to Earth on a comet spaceship. Her inspiration came from Javier Cabrera Darquea’s 10-year-study of thousands of engraved river stones found near Ica, Peru, not far from the world-famous Nazca Lines. While many believe the stones were a hoax, Darquea maintains they are records from an advanced civilization that thrived on Earth millions of years ago, when aliens, humans, and dinosaurs shared this planet.

“In my novel, sixteen-year-old Jade Davis must find a way to join the alien travelers on the comet and save humanity from fiery destruction,” said Fendley. The Labyrinth of Time will be available Nov. 7, 2014, from online booksellers. Most local bookstores and libraries can order it on customer request.

T.W. Fendley is an award-winning author of historical fantasy and science fiction for adults and young adults. She began writing fiction full-time in 2007 after working twenty-five years in journalism and corporate communications. In October 2011, L&L Dreamspell LLC published her debut historical fantasy novel for adults, Zero Time.

T.W. fell in love with ancient American cultures while researching story ideas at the 1997 Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers’ Workshop. Since then, she’s trekked to archeological sites in the Yucatan, Peru and American Southwest. She currently lives near St. Louis with her artist husband and his pet fish.

BRoP interview: Sandra Ulbrich Almazan

Sandra Ulbrich Almazan Welcome to Sandra Ulbrich Almazan –  one of our own Blog Ring of Power bloggers! Her new book comes out tomorrow, but you can preorder it today!

Sandra started reading at the age of three and only stops when absolutely required to. Although she hasn’t been writing quite that long, she did compose a very simple play in German during middle school. Her science fiction novella Move Over Ms. L. (an early version of Lyon’s Legacy) earned an Honorable Mention in the 2001 UPC Science Fiction Awards, and her short story “A Reptile at the Reunion” was published in the anthology Firestorm of Dragons. Other published works by Sandra include Twinned Universes and several science fiction and fantasy short stories. She is a founding member of Broad Universe, which promotes science fiction, fantasy, and horror written by women. Her undergraduate degree is in molecular biology/English, and she has a Master of Technical and Scientific Communication degree. Her day job is in the laboratory of an enzyme company; she’s also been a technical writer and a part-time copyeditor for a local newspaper. Some of her other accomplishments are losing on Jeopardy! and taking a stuffed orca to three continents. She lives in the Chicago area with her husband, Eugene; and son, Alex. In her rare moments of free time, she enjoys crocheting, listening to classic rock (particularly the Beatles), and watching improv comedy.

PART 4: ABOUT YOUR CURRENT WORK

Tell us about your new book and when it is out? Where can people purchase it?—My latest book is Seasons’ Beginnings, Book One of the fantasy Season Avatar series. The eBook version will go live on Amazon 10/21/14 but is already available for pre-order. A paper version will be available very soon from Amazon and Createspace.

Is there anything new, unusual, or interesting about your book? This book started off as a short story I wrote to explore the world of the Season Avatar series. It describes the origin of the Season Avatars, magicians who are gifted by the Four Gods and Goddesses of Challen with specific types of magic. The Avatars must deal with Salth, a demigoddess of Time and the enemy of the Four. The story is told from the viewpoint of Kron Evenhanded, a magician who is a stranger to Challen but knows Salth and marries one of the Avatars.

What was the hardest part of writing this book?—Some of the hardest parts of this book were showing a sympathetic side to Salth and making sure the magic fits with what I have planned for the rest of the series.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?—I enjoyed writing about the Avatars. The next four books of the series will focus on four of the Avatars, who are in a much different situation. It was fun planting the seeds of what they will turn into.

Tell us about your book’s cover – where did the design come from and what was the design process like?—For this series, I approached Maria Zannini of Book Cover Diva. She has a cover art questionnaire that authors fill out as part of the book design process. We came up with an element that is constant throughout the series, and she found stock photos to match what my hero looks like. I plan to work with her for the rest of the series.

PART 5: WORDS OF WISDOM

Tell us about your route to success – how/when did you decide to self-publish? Did you query an agent first? How did you handle the editing, proofreading, cover design, etc.—Ever since I self-published Lyon’s Legacy in 2011, I’ve been a big proponent of self-publishing. I enjoy the control I have over the entire process and the freedom to write about what appeals to me instead of what publishers think will sell. My beta readers helped me with editing and proofreading, and I hired a cover artist. I did the formatting/layout with the help of a Word template I purchased at BookDesignTemplates.com.

What are the most important elements of good writing?—The writing shouldn’t get in the way of the story; it shouldn’t be distracting or confusing. Emotions are key to writing a story that will resonate with readers.

Do you have any advice for other writers?—Read a lot and keep writing.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?—Thanks for your support!

What are your current / future project(s)?—I’m currently working on Scattered Seasons, Book Two of the Season Avatars series. After I finish the second draft, I plan to return to my SF Catalyst Chronicles series and write a story about a minor character in Twinned Universes.

Is your book in print, ebook or both?—Both

BRoP Interview: Lauralynn Elliott

Welcome to Lauralynn Elliott, this week’s Blog Ring of Power guest. Lauralynn is an independently published author of paranormal and fantasy romance books, as well as some horror. She started the indie journey several years ago and has never regretted it, loving the freedom to publish what she wants when she wants. You will find everything from vampires and ghosts to elves and wizards in her novels and novellas. She enjoys putting a little bit of a different twist on some of the old ideas about our favorite fictional characters.

Lauralynn lives in the southeastern United States with her husband of many years. She has two grown sons whom she adores. Reading, playing computer games, and spending time with friends are some of her favorite activities.

BRoP Logo Revised-1Don’t miss the rest of Lauralynn’s interview with the Blog Ring of Power at:

PART 1: ABOUT YOU

How long have you been writing? I’ve actually been writing since I was about 10 years old. I’ve been publishing since 2008.

Tell us about your early works—what was the first thing you ever wrote? The VERY first thing I wrote was a little story about a girl named Angel. I was about 10, and I wrote it all on index cards.

When did you first consider yourself a professional writer? When I published my first book in 2008, A Rocky Path.

What genre do you write? I write mostly paranormal romance and a little bit of horror. I’m currently working on a murder mystery.

If you couldn’t be an author, what would your ideal career be? An artist…if I was artistic. LOL

PART 2: THE WRITING LIFE

What is your writing process? Do you follow a regular routine? Do you use pen and paper or computer? Work at home or at the library/Starbucks, etc. I go into my home office to get away from the TV when my husband is watching it. I use the computer because writing it with pen and paper never has made sense to me. There’s no set routine since I have so much other stuff going on.

How do you balance writing with other aspects of your life? It’s very hard. I have a full-time job, plus a job as a proofreader. I have to remember to set aside time for my own writing.

When do you write? I write in the evenings and during the day on Saturdays.

What is the strongest criticism you’ve ever received as an author? The best compliment? The strongest criticism was when a reviewer accused me of stealing a character from a book I hadn’t even read. To me, the best compliment is when someone tells me they had to stay up late reading my book because they couldn’t put it down.

How do you deal with rejection and/or negative reviews? Negative reviews hurt. Especially the nasty ones. But I’ve learned to just forget about them because I realize even the best authors get them.

Is your book in print, ebook or both? Ebook right now, but print is coming soon.
