Part 2: The Writing Life

What is your writing process? Do you follow a regular routine? Do you use pen and paper or computer? Work at home or at the library/Starbucks, etc. I work at home in my Big Bird Nest.  If it is November and I am participating in NaNoWriMo I get up before the sun and write until 2000 words have passed.  The rest of the time, I hit and miss.

How do you balance writing with other aspects of your life?  I mostly work writing in, when I can.  I am a marketing manager for Damnation Books & Eternal Press and spend a lot of time marketing other authors’ books.  My external obligations go first.  Writing is frosting on the gluten free cupcake.

When do you write? If I can define writing as the act of communication, I do it a lot.  I also paint landscapes and crochet.  Writing is one of my creative outlets.

What has been the most surprising reaction to something you’ve written? One time I sent a manuscript to a woman who said she would look it over in exchange for a tarot reading.  I had worked on it for a long time.  I got the manuscript back in the mail with these words scrawled across the title page – “This must have been your first draft.”  I didn’t write fiction for a long time.

Other than your family, what has been your greatest source of support? The participants over at The Writer’s Chatroom have kept me going.  They cheer me on.  They hold the dustpan when I’ve been shattered.

How do you deal with rejection and/or negative reviews? Oh, dear.  A bad review.  If possible I simply thank the reviewer and if the remarks have merit I work on those things in the next novel.  After a novel is out it simply is – I can’t very well take it back from my readers.  So, I try to address the issues in my next novel.  Being able to handle bad remarks is a sign of a professional.  Being graceful is another mark of a good author.  Thank everyone, every time.  Thank anyone who takes time to read your words.

Is your book in print, ebook or both? Both are available in e-format and print.

    Sally,

It occurs to me that many writers are talented in other creative pursuits as well. I also paint landscapes and love it!

  1. Thanks so much for being our guest, Sally! I wish you great success in your writing career 🙂
